- Meeting Overview:
At the August 27, 2024, Hatfield Select Board meeting, the board approved a $1.4 million USDA loan for town projects, discussed the upcoming special town meeting concerning a crucial culvert repair, and approved a one-day liquor license for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.
The approval of the USDA loan was a major highlight of the meeting. This loan, amounting to $1.4 million, will be used to fund various town projects. The town administrator confirmed that the loan application, worked on in conjunction with the treasurer-collector, had been approved. This funding aims to address essential infrastructural needs and improvements within the town, providing a significant boost to ongoing and future projects.
Another topic discussed was the special town meeting scheduled for September 11, 2024. The primary focus of this meeting will be to address the restoration of the culvert under Main Street, just north of the wastewater treatment plant. This repair is deemed critical for public safety and has garnered attention from residents. The project is currently out for bid, with the deadline for bids approaching next week. The board emphasized the urgency of the repair and the importance of community participation in the upcoming town meeting.
The board also approved a one-day wine and malt liquor license for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts for their annual “Will Bike for Food” event on September 22, 2024. This event, held at the Lions Club, features various bike routes and family-friendly activities aiming to raise funds and awareness for the food bank’s initiatives. The application for the license was reviewed and found to be complete.
This project, which is now at 100% design, aims to enhance pedestrian safety in conjunction with existing bus stops along the route. The board reviewed the plans and confirmed that the proposed traffic islands would be painted rather than physical structures, alleviating concerns about traffic flow and snow removal.
The meeting also addressed ongoing issues related to fire department staffing and response times. The board discussed the recent letter from Northampton’s fire chief, which stated that Northampton would not be able to send their last dispatched ambulance to Hatfield if they were down to one available unit. This has raised concerns about local emergency response capabilities and the need for continued discussions on potential solutions, including regional cooperation.
Finally, the board acknowledged the passing of Bob Shay, a former volunteer firefighter known for his kindness and dedication to the community. Condolences were extended to his family.
