- Meeting Overview:
The Winslow School Board met on August 28, 2024, to discuss several critical matters, including the approval of a quarter-page advertisement in the township newsletter for $525. The advertisement aims to expand informational outreach to all households in Winslow, including new residents from upcoming housing developments.
The approval of the quarter-page advertisement was a point of discussion. The board emphasized the importance of community engagement and the potential benefits of reaching every household in Winslow. The advertisement will include a QR code to maximize the limited space, allowing for ongoing updates. The motion to approve the advertisement was proposed and received unanimous support through a roll call vote. The board believes this initiative will enhance communication and keep residents informed about district achievements and upcoming events.
Another topic was the enforcement of the student code of conduct for the upcoming academic year. The administration stressed the strict enforcement of regulations concerning student behavior, particularly addressing safety concerns raised by parents. Disruptive behaviors such as fighting, bullying, and chronic absenteeism would not be tolerated. The administration assured parents that the safety of students and staff is a priority, stating, “if young people do not come to school to learn, then they need not be there.”
The policy on chronic absenteeism was also discussed in detail. By law, any student who misses 20 consecutive days without proper communication or medical documentation from their parents will be removed from the school rolls. This measure aims to eliminate “ghost students” from the attendance records. The administration highlighted instances where students had excessive absences, with some missing as many as 70 days of school. The correlation between attendance and academic success was underscored, emphasizing the need for parental accountability in ensuring regular school attendance.
The board also addressed the opening of a new early childhood education center at Shirley B. Foster Elementary School. The facility includes various special learning features aimed at enhancing the educational experience for students. A recent ribbon-cutting ceremony was mentioned, with thanks extended to community members who participated. The administration praised the efforts of the building and grounds crew for their hard work in preparing the center in a short timeframe, describing their work as “phenomenal.”
In the realm of athletics, the board highlighted the district’s achievements, particularly the success of the girls’ track team, which features a 14-year-old athlete ranked among the top performers nationally. The Winslow football team, which has secured two sectional championships in the last three years, is set to play against Mount Clair, generating excitement within the community.
The operations committee reported on ongoing projects, including the status of the 2021 project related to the main office at School 6. The project is awaiting a certificate of completion from the township. Updates on various capital projects, including circulation plans at schools 1, 2, 3, 4, and the middle school, were provided. Summer repairs were highlighted, including gym floor repairs at School 5, installation of new exterior doors to prevent water intrusion, and flooring replacements in various school offices.
The policy committee convened on August 22 and discussed several policies, including revisions to board member terms, curriculum content regulations, and physical examination requirements for teaching and support staff. Policies concerning student suicide prevention and volunteer athletic coaches were reviewed, with the latter two being abolished. The next policy committee meeting is scheduled for September 26, 2024.
In other business, a resident highlighted a legislative initiative aimed at increasing civic engagement among students. This initiative permits students in grades 6 through 12 to have one excused absence per year for participation in civic events sponsored by governmental or nonprofit organizations. The board discussed ensuring this initiative aligns with the upcoming general election and collaborating with the Camden County Board of Elections to facilitate student involvement.
