- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Camden School Board meeting, tensions ran high as numerous community members demanded the resignation of Board President Wasim Muhammad amid serious allegations of past misconduct. The public comments section was dominated by these calls for accountability.
One notable issue discussed at the meeting revolved around allegations against Mr. Muhammad, who has been accused of creating a hostile environment and was found liable for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” in a recent trial. Jeff Fritz, an attorney representing Selma Robinson, a former student involved in the case, presented copies of the verdict sheet and emphasized the trauma his client endured. Fritz urged the board to take immediate action, stating, “Mr. Muhammad is now an extreme liability risk to the school district and to the children of Camden.”
The atmosphere grew more charged as speaker after speaker echoed these sentiments. One individual highlighted the urgency of addressing the allegations, stating, “every single one of y’all told us that we could come to y’all if we need any help,” while condemning the board for inaction. This individual, identifying as a student board representative, connected their personal experiences and those of others, emphasizing the gravity of having an alleged rapist in a position of authority.
Community members also brought forth personal stories and broader concerns about the impact of such leadership on students. Judith Graham invoked her own experiences of molestation to underscore the long-term effects of childhood trauma, arguing for the need for justice and accountability within the district. Another speaker, Jose Delgado, accused the superintendent of dishonesty regarding community participation in decisions about school closures, claiming that the administration had dismissed community concerns and failed to advocate for students.
Speakers like Tammy Wilson criticized the board’s perceived inaction, recounting a distressing encounter where she felt verbally attacked by individuals aligned with Mr. Muhammad. Wilson labeled Muhammad a “narcissist” and called for accountability.
Amir K. Kane presented allegations of a “sexually hostile environment” created by Mr. Muhammad, questioning the message this sends to the community and students. Kane implored the board to consider the implications of allowing someone like Muhammad to maintain his position, arguing that it undermined the dignity and well-being of the students.
Reverend Tim Merrill directly addressed Mr. Muhammad, urging him to step down for the sake of community healing. He expressed disappointment in the board members for their failure to act and called for them to publicly acknowledge the need for integrity among those overseeing the education and welfare of Camden’s children.
As the board attempted to move into a closed executive session to discuss personnel matters, ongoing disruptions led to the suspension of public comments. Despite the presiding officer’s note on the legal obligation to provide time for public input, the meeting was ultimately adjourned due to the loss of quorum.
