Lawrence School Board Launches New School Year with Rebranding and Staff Induction
- Meeting Overview:
The Lawrence (Mercer County) School Board meeting focused on the launch of the new school year, rebranding efforts, and the integration of new staff members. Key discussions included the unveiling of a refreshed district logo, welcoming 35 new staff members, and addressing public concerns regarding staff retention and instructional changes.
Superintendent Robyn Klim announced the district’s rebranding initiative, which involved input from principals, some staff members, and parent-teacher organizations (PTOs).
In preparation for the new school year, which begins on September 3 for staff and September 5 for students, the district has conducted a four-day induction program for approximately 35 new staff members. These staff members have been trained in various areas including curriculum, responsive classroom techniques, and restorative practices to ensure they are well-prepared to start the school year. Superintendent Klim expressed pride in the new staff and acknowledged the important role of the facilities and maintenance teams in preparing the school environment.
Public comments during the meeting raised concerns about transparency and staff retention. A former kindergarten aide highlighted a significant reduction in ASI (Academic Support Instruction) teachers at Ben Franklin and other elementary schools, questioning how the needs of students would be met with fewer resources. Additionally, concerns were voiced regarding the requirement for preschool children to be potty trained and the adequacy of support for those who are not.
The board also addressed the resignation and retirement of key staff members, including the retirement of long-serving receptionist and secretary Joanne Patron, whose tenure will end in January. Patron’s cheerful and helpful demeanor was praised, and her departure was noted as a significant loss to the district.
In other business, the board discussed upcoming events and resources from the New Jersey School Board Association, including newsletters, podcasts, and webinars aimed at enhancing board effectiveness and supporting new board members.
The meeting concluded with the approval of various personnel changes, including leave replacements, resignations, new hires, and travel logs, as well as the acceptance of a $34,500 grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb, facilitated by the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF).
