- Meeting Overview:
The Austin City Council convened to discuss a variety of issues, including the approval of a tax abatement application for a new home in the Nature’s Ridge subdivision, a welcoming week proclamation, and the awarding of several contracts related to city infrastructure and services.
In a recent session, Council approved a tax abatement application for a new home valued at $460,000, located at 1312 18th Street Northeast in the Nature’s Ridge subdivision. The abatement was presented as being in conformance with the city’s adopted policy. The home, developed by New Horizon Homes LLC, features three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The resolution passed unanimously with a 6-0 vote. This abatement is seen as an effort to encourage development and growth within the city.
Another highlight of the meeting was the proclamation of Welcoming Week 2024. This marks the 12th year of the national campaign, which aims to connect neighbors through community-informed activities and events. The proclamation was accepted by Denver Ritz and Miguel Grate, who were recognized for their efforts in promoting inclusivity.
The Council also discussed and approved several other items. They awarded a T-Mobile lease agreement for a tower at the wastewater treatment facility and a contract for tree removal in waterways affected by recent flooding. The tree removal project, awarded to Hansen Hauling and Excavating at a bid of $27,400, is expected to be reimbursed by FEMA. Additionally, the Council approved a bid for asbestos abatement of the former Herald building at 310 2nd Street Northeast, with Mavo Systems winning the contract at $163,700.
In other business, the Council set a public hearing for October 7, 2024, to discuss fall assessments related to nuisances. They also awarded a bid for City Hall stucco repair due to water damage near the city administrator’s office. The contract, valued at $199,200, was awarded to Eric Bell.
Towards the end of the meeting, Council members and the Mayor took the opportunity to acknowledge various community events and initiatives. The upcoming voting forum, artworks festival, and a free concert by the Plain White T’s sponsored by Hormel Foods were highlighted. Additionally, the Mayor recognized the retirement of longtime police officer Patrick Rath, who will be formally honored in October. The meeting concluded with the acknowledgment of city employees’ anniversaries, recognizing their years of service in various departments.
