- Meeting Overview:
The Teaneck Town Council meeting covered a variety of topics, including the approval of ordinances for municipal salaries and capital improvements, updates on major infrastructure projects, and community concerns about traffic safety and environmental issues.
Among one notable issues discussed was the approval of two ordinances during the public hearing segment. One ordinance established salary ranges and classifications for municipal employees, while the other was a bond ordinance for various capital improvements totaling $8,185,000. The public hearing on these ordinances concluded without any comments from attendees, and both were subsequently adopted with unanimous approval by the council. These ordinances are critical for the continued functionality and development of Teaneck.
Another major topic of discussion was the safety concerns at the intersection of Prince and Grayson. Multiple residents voiced their worries about the obstructed views caused by trees on private property, which have led to several near-accidents. One resident highlighted that vehicles approaching from Prince often have to inch forward without a clear line of sight, creating dangerous situations as there is no stop sign for traffic on Grayson. Despite all signage being displayed, cars have been observed passing school buses. The council acknowledged these concerns and assured residents that traffic engineers would continue to evaluate the situation to implement effective safety measures.
The meeting also addressed ongoing infrastructure projects, including updates on the Bev drainage project and the submission of the diversion tank survey to the Department of Environmental Protection for approval. Additionally, recent infrastructure improvements were noted, such as the completion of paving on Lindberg Boulevard and pipe repairs. The council emphasized the importance of these projects in enhancing the township’s infrastructure and mitigating issues like flooding and road safety.
In terms of community services, the Friends of the Teaneck Library presented a update. Led by Sandy Silverberg, the group successfully raised $20,000 through a fundraising challenge, surpassing their initial goal of $10,000. These funds will be used for various improvements at the library, including a new water fountain, shelving, comfortable seating, and grants for children’s and teen programs. The library director, referred to as “Chan,” expressed excitement about the ongoing renovations at the library and thanked an anonymous donor for an additional $5,000 contribution to be matched. The council members lauded the efforts of the Friends of the Library, emphasizing the importance of volunteerism in enhancing the library’s services.
Environmental concerns were also a focal point of the meeting. Deanne from Pomander Walk raised an issue regarding Five Star Premier Senior Residences, which allegedly violated a developer’s agreement by removing trees from their property. She emphasized that this was not just a matter of protocol but a requirement by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) that necessitates remediation of the forest habitat. The removal of trees has disrupted local wildlife, and Deanne urged the township attorney to ensure compliance with local ordinances.
Additionally, Chris Brown from Bell Avenue expressed frustration over ongoing drainage issues and delays associated with a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He highlighted the risk and exposure to storm damage due to slow progress on a project intended to alleviate these concerns. Brown suggested that finding funds to design the system could expedite progress, advocating for bonding to address the issue comprehensively.
David Mery praised the council’s efforts at the Teaneck Day event, noting the positive atmosphere and engagement created. He also inquired about updates on affordable housing and how residents are being informed about the Cedar Lane work. Sarah K, participating via Zoom, echoed sentiments of gratitude for Teaneck Day and reiterated ongoing issues at the Grayson and Prince intersection.
The council also discussed several grant updates, including a $5,799 grant from the US Department of Justice for bulletproof vests and approximately $120,000 recommended by Bergen County Open Space for outdoor exercise equipment for Phelps Park. A $75,000 American Rescue Plan firefighter grant is advancing to the next approval stage. Additionally, a resolution was on the agenda to support a grant application from the Bright Side Family, focusing on community projects aimed at reducing social isolation among older adults while encouraging youth involvement.
