- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting held via Zoom, the Franklin Public Library Board of Trustees made several notable decisions, including approving an increase in vacation days for long-serving staff members and accepting the resignation of a long-time board member.
The most impactful decision was the approval of an increase in vacation days for full-time staff members who have been employed by the library for 20 years or more. Effective September 1, 2024, these employees will now receive 26 vacation days, up from 25. This decision came after a motion to table the discussion was lifted. The motion was unanimously passed. One board member noted that this change is in line with policies of other library systems, although it was also mentioned that the Somerset County library system offers these benefits from the start.
Another notable development was the acceptance of the resignation of Nabil “NBC” Choueiri, who had served as the vice president and treasurer. Choueiri expressed his gratitude for the support and valuable experiences he gained during his tenure. Despite attempts to discuss the resignation further, he did not provide specific reasons for his departure. The board unanimously accepted his resignation and decided to present him with a plaque in appreciation of his long service. In a swift follow-up, Mayor Phillip Kramer appointed Aisha Ali, the board’s newest member, to fill Choueiri’s position as a full member. Additionally, Agnes Kulab was elected as the new vice president and treasurer, a role she will serve until the end of the year.
During the meeting, it was also reported that the library’s roof repairs had been completed, and the new lighting was well-received. The Adult Services Department hosted 37 programs with 409 attendees, while the Youth Services Department had 31 programs attended by 1,569 participants. New initiatives, such as the Teen Reading Challenge, were highlighted as promising new additions to the library’s offerings.
Finally, the board considered a return to in-person meetings. The next meeting, scheduled for September 25, 2024, will be held in person at the library’s history room. This decision underscores the board’s intention to foster more direct interaction among its members.
