- Meeting Overview:
The West Orange School Board meeting on September 16, 2024, featured a noteworthy recognition of student achievements, discussions on academic policies, and administrative updates on transportation and upcoming events.
One item at the meeting was the recognition of Robinson Bennett, a West Orange High School student, for his academic achievements at the Governor’s School program in Engineering and Technology. Superintendent Hayden Moore and Principal Oscar Guerrero introduced Robinson, who has a GPA of 4.54 and is a member of six honor societies. Robinson detailed his experience, including coursework in modern physics, robotics, and a collaborative project with NASA focused on designing a workstation for use on the moon. This project will be presented at the prestigious MIT Undergraduate Research and Technology Conference. Robinson’s accomplishments were met with admiration from board members, who praised his humility and dedication.
Robinson’s presentation led to an emotional discussion about the importance of recognizing student potential beyond standardized testing. Michaela Bennett, a community member, thanked the board for honoring Robinson and emphasized the critical role of teachers. She shared Robinson’s academic journey, highlighting that despite his excellent grades and recommendations, he was initially not eligible for honors classes due to testing scores. Michaela argued for a more equitable approach to honors programming, advocating that “one test cannot determine a student’s aptitude.” Her persistence led to Robinson being placed in honors classes starting in sixth grade, which she credited for his ongoing academic success.
Former board president Ron Charles echoed Michaela’s sentiments, stressing the need for opportunities based on potential rather than rigid testing criteria. He raised a notable question, “how many Robinsons have we lost in the last 10, 12, 15 years?” highlighting the potential students who might have been overlooked due to the existing system. Superintendent Moore acknowledged these concerns and mentioned the ongoing review of policies regarding honors programming.
The board also discussed the district’s performance in various areas, with a particular focus on instructional quality, which was rated at 82%. A board member remarked on the need to address instructional programs to better serve student needs, given that the state benchmark is set at 80%.
In administrative matters, Vice President Maria Vera addressed the upcoming special election on September 18th. The board discussed ongoing transportation challenges, with the director of transportation present to listen to community concerns and work on specific issues with families. Parents were encouraged to engage with the transportation team to address their concerns directly.
Mayor Moore provided a report highlighting recent community events, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a football game, emphasizing the importance of student participation and school spirit. The sense of community involvement from students, coaches, and families was highlighted as significant to the overall experience of the school year.
The meeting concluded with routine approvals of resolutions concerning personnel, curriculum, and finance, alongside the acknowledgment of retiring staff members for their contributions. Public comments were invited, and the next board meeting was scheduled for October 28, 2024, before the meeting was adjourned.
