Taunton School Committee Celebrates Fourth-Grade Graduates and Honors Longtime Staff
- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee meeting was marked by a series of celebratory events, recognizing the achievements of fourth-grade students and honoring the long service of retiring staff members. The atmosphere was filled with applause, laughter, and farewells, highlighting the close-knit community within the school.
The meeting began with an enthusiastic welcome to the fourth-grade graduates. The speaker humorously acknowledged the emotional atmosphere, remarking, “I have my tissues; I’m probably not going to look at most of you because I’m going to see you cry.” This set the stage for a series of recognitions and awards for both students and staff.
Among the highlights was the recognition of individual students for their achievements and contributions throughout the school year. Students from Room 9, including Abigail, Jeffrey, Rodrigo, and Somaya, were called to the front, each receiving applause and encouragement from their peers and faculty. The atmosphere was lively, with reminders to navigate the stairs carefully amid the excitement.
The “Student of the Month” awards were presented next, highlighting character traits such as friendship and cooperation. Notable recipients included Jaden Saletto from Room 9, Tiia Marcus from Room 11, and Alani Lugo from Room 12. Following this, awards for responsibility were given to Harrison Garza from Room 9, Chase Cornell from Room 11, and Austin Allen from Room 12.
The ceremony then transitioned to the “Student of the Year” awards, which recognized students who demonstrated consistent good choices and growth throughout the year. The recipients were Nicandra Hender from Room 9, Kayen Merck from Room 11, and Beatric Amato from Room 12. Each award was met with applause.
In addition to student awards, the meeting also honored various contributions to the school community. A parent identified as Somaya’s mother was thanked for her consistent support through her balloon company, which provided decorations for school events. The PTO vice president was also recognized for her lengthy service, contributing over ten years to the organization and benefiting her children’s educational experiences.
The farewells to retiring staff members added a notable note to the meeting. Mrs. Cord, an English language learner teacher with 33 years of service, was honored for her dedication to supporting students learning English. Her impact on numerous lives was emphasized.
Mrs. Anderson, a fourth-grade teacher with a tenure of 36 years, was celebrated for her holistic approach to teaching, prioritizing the well-being and development of children over mere academic instruction. Her legacy was acknowledged, and she received flowers from students as a token of appreciation.
Nurse Martha, who had worked at the Galligan School for a decade, was also honored. Her contributions, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, were highlighted. Her unwavering dedication to student health and safety, alongside her compassionate care, earned her deep respect and appreciation from the school community.
The meeting featured a message to the fourth-grade graduates, delivered in the form of a “top 10 thoughts” for the students to consider as they transition to middle school. The speaker emphasized the importance of prioritizing relationships over technology, urging students to “put those cell phones down” and be present. They also highlighted the significance of acknowledging mistakes, stating, “if you make a mistake, say you’re sorry and work hard not to make that same mistake.”
The speaker introduced the concept of failure as a learning opportunity, using the acronym “failure is a first attempt in learning,” and provided examples of renowned figures who faced rejection but ultimately succeeded. The message of resilience and gratitude was reinforced, encouraging students to express thanks to their families and teachers for their support.
