- Meeting Overview:
The South Bergen Jointure Commission (SBJC) convened on April 25, 2023, resulting in a series of critical decisions and appointments. The meeting opened with the election of Damian Kennedy as the President and Joseph DeCorso as the Vice President of the SBJC, both for one-year terms.
Kennedy’s nomination was put forward by Frank Scarafile and seconded by Giovanni Giancaspro. Following unanimous support for his nomination, the resolution was passed, officially electing him as the President. Similarly, DeCorso’s nomination, moved by John Hurley and seconded by Giancaspro, received unanimous backing, culminating in his election as the Vice President.
Post the elections, the board members addressed committee assignments. The Superintendent recommended Allison Evans and John Hurley as the Chairs for the SBJC Board Professional Development Committee and the Negotiations Committee, respectively. Other key assignments included Dr. Sue DeNobile, Ms. Danielle Shanley, and Mr. Anthony Albro for the Strategic Planning Committee, and Mr. James Knipper, Mr. Jason Cirichella, Dr. Dario Sforza, and Dr. Stephen Yurchak for the Finance Committee. These recommendations were unanimously approved.
The meeting then transitioned to staffing appointments for various roles effective July 1, 2023. Lorraine Carrasco-Rake was appointed as the Affirmative Action Officer and Anti-Bullying Coordinator, while Ashley Vaughan was chosen as an additional Anti-Bullying Coordinator. Other appointments included Susan Cucciniello in a variety of positions such as the Public Agency Compliance Officer, Board Secretary, and Qualified Purchasing Agent, and Ken Sheldon as the Indoor Air Quality designate for PEOSHA and District Asbestos Coordinator.
The board also passed numerous administrative resolutions. Individuals requesting copies of meeting schedules or revisions will now be charged $1.00 per month, with the possibility to renew their requests at the end of each year. There were also authorizations concerning various checks, with the President or Vice President, along with the Board Secretary, Business Administrator or Superintendent of Schools, and Treasurer, now authorized to sign General Fund checks. Similar authorizations were given for Payroll Checks, Payroll Agency Checks, Cafeteria Checks, Unemployment Trust Fund Checks, and Student Activity Fund Checks.
A significant resolution during the meeting involved granting the Superintendent emergency authorization to hire personnel for various positions for the 2023-2024 school year. The range of positions spanned from Teacher Aides and School Social Workers to School Psychologists and Physical Education Teachers.
