- Meeting Overview:
The Taunton School Committee convened to discuss issues including the renovation of the Taunton High School softball field and urgent roof repairs at Flal Elementary School.
The meeting commenced with a discussion led by Assistant Superintendent M. Hand about the Taunton High School softball field renovation project. The evaluation of contractors was set to be completed by October 16, with construction tentatively scheduled to commence on October 17. The project aims to reach substantial completion by March 17 and finalize by March 24. The committee expressed hopes for mild winter weather to avoid delays, acknowledging the timeline’s proximity to the spring sports season. A motion to receive and place this item on file passed without opposition.
In parallel, the Long-Range Planning Subcommittee reported on a meeting held on September 10, focusing on urgent roof repairs needed at Flal Elementary School. The subcommittee emphasized the immediate necessity for repairs and called for the Superintendent to notify the city council and relevant city entities about the issue. A motion to communicate this urgent need passed with a 2-1 vote.
The committee also reviewed procurement card expenditures for July and August. Assistant Superintendent M. Hand reported that charges amounted to $5,800 in July and over $10,000 in August. The expenditures, detailed in a memo, were mainly attributed to grants, food services, and the school budget. Clarifications were sought regarding flights and hotels, confirming that these were for professional development conferences attended by staff. A motion to receive and place this information on file was approved.
In another discussion, the committee addressed bills payable for fiscal years 2022 and 2024. The expenses for fiscal year 2022 totaled $696,000, including substantial construction improvements for the culinary kitchen at Taunton High School and the Tiger Den patio. Clarifications were also provided about library book subscriptions and equipment replacements related to an HVAC grant project nearing completion. A motion to approve these bills passed, followed by another motion approving fiscal year 2024 bills payable, totaling $291,618.43.
A moment of silence was observed for three recently deceased individuals, Mary Bliss, Richard Paca, and Majie Sweetman Yugo. Personal recollections highlighted their contributions to the community, and committee members expressed their condolences, requesting the community to keep these families in their thoughts and prayers.
Natalie Duncan, a member of the student advisory committee, provided a report on the start of the 2024 school year. She noted noticeable improvements throughout the school and highlighted a successful college boot camp organized by the guidance department. She also mentioned the positive impact of the new Link Crew on eighth-grade students and reported high participation levels during welcome week spirit activities, culminating in a party for students. Duncan provided updates on fall sports, noting that 410 students were participating and the first home football game saw a strong turnout with Taunton High achieving a victory against Dery. Various clubs and activities, including dual enrollment classes and drama club auditions, had commenced, and a college fair was scheduled soon. Duncan also remarked on the ongoing library renovations nearing completion.
In addition, updates were provided on various initiatives and programs in the Taunton School District. A notable item was that 50 freshmen are currently enrolled in early college classes, allowing them to accumulate 30 college credits by the time they graduate from Taunton High. The nationally recognized Esports team is expanding by adding a new video game. Additionally, Logan Rebello, a SkillsUSA Massachusetts state officer from Taunton High, is set to travel to Washington, D.C., for a one-on-one meeting with a White House representative. The Tiger Den is also enhancing its kitchen facilities with a new commercial fridge.
Though Superintendent John J. Cabral was unable to attend the meeting due to a conference in Chicago, his gratitude towards the teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and custodial staff for their efforts in preparing for the school year was conveyed. Cabral highlighted the unique experience of the school opening, particularly with kindergarteners learning to navigate the school environment, and noted the joy of seeing young students engage with their new surroundings.
The committee also discussed an athletic program assessment completed last spring at Taunton High School as part of a pilot program aimed at evaluating and professionalizing the experiences of student-athletes. The assessment focused on multiple areas including administration, resources, equity, and student safety. Ms. Christine Fagan, the chair of the athletic subcommittee, commented on the initiative, noting the importance of addressing the challenges of recruiting referees for sporting events and emphasizing the need for civility in sports amid concerns over violence during games. The assessment report is intended to be made available on the school district’s website.
