- Meeting Overview:
The Sweetwater City Commission has officially adopted the final budget and millage rate for the fiscal year commencing October 1, 2024, and ending September 30, 2025. The critical decisions were made during the commission’s meeting on Monday, September 23, 2024.
The commission approved a resolution to adopt the final millage rate of 3.5634 mills. This new rate translates to $327 per thousand of assessed property value. The approval process included a second public hearing, though no public comments were made.
Following the millage rate approval, the commission moved to adopt the final budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget, based on the newly approved millage rate, was presented by the mayor and amended by the commission. This budget will guide the city’s financial planning and operations for the next year.
Another agenda item was the approval of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) and the Sweetwater Police Department. This MOU allows for access to the MDPD’s photo imaging system, retroactive to December 19, 2017. The commission passed this resolution unanimously.
The commission also approved a contract with DataWorks Plus LLC for access to certain law enforcement databases and the provision of necessary hardware and training. The Sweetwater Police Chief provided details, explaining that the costs are covered by a percentage of the tickets written, amounting to $85,968 and $96,296 for initial fees and ongoing costs, respectively. The new equipment will replace outdated systems currently in use.
Additionally, the commission approved a contract with CivicPlus LLC for software to be used by the building department and code enforcement. This software aims to centralize records, expedite processes, and increase transparency. The cost for the first year is $38,500, with a recurring cost of about 5% annually. This system will also facilitate online payments and integrate with the city’s existing systems.
In closing, a correction was made regarding the DataWorks Plus system, clarifying that it is part of the “Rapid ID” system used for identification purposes. The cost for this system is $895 per year, funded by the police department’s IT budget.
