- Meeting Overview:
The Cinnaminson School Board meeting covered a range of issues, including the resumption of the Quality Accountability Continuum (QAC) after a nine-year gap, plans for a fifth-grade career day, and the creation of a military tribute wall at the high school.
In a discussion, the board detailed their preparations for the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (QAC), a self-evaluation and performance review model that serves as the district’s accreditation. This process, mandatory for all New Jersey school districts every three years, focuses on five key areas: instruction and programming, fiscal management, governance, operations, and personnel. The Cinnaminson School District had not participated in the QAC since the 2014-2015 period, having opted for waivers granted for high performance and due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The QAC assessment requires districts to submit District Performance Reports (DPRs) to the Department of Education, which are then reviewed by the executive county superintendent’s office, followed by an on-site evaluation. Superintendent Stephen M. Cappello highlighted the importance of meeting state standards and noted the district scored 84 points in instruction and programming, with a graduation rate of approximately 92%. The district scored 98 out of 100 in operations and a perfect 100 in governance, reflecting strong adherence to policies and effective management.
Cappello emphasized the careful detail required for the QAC, noting that even a single missed compliance date could result in a significant loss of points. He praised the efforts of the team, particularly those responsible for presenting evidence of compliance. The rigorous evaluations cover various aspects, from fiscal management to health and safety protocols, with the district’s facilities passing a 51-point checklist.
In other developments, Cappello announced an upcoming fifth-grade career day at Rush School on November 22, inviting community members to present diverse career opportunities. He also unveiled plans for a military tribute wall at the high school to honor alumni who have served in the armed forces. This wall will be prominently placed near the existing Cinnaminson Hall of Fame display.
The board also discussed the district’s involvement in community events, such as the Relay for Life, scheduled for Saturday, which seeks to engage the community in support of a worthy cause. Enrollment in the district is nearing 3,000 students, and Cappello mentioned plans to expand educational facilities, including the installation of learning cottages at two schools. Additionally, the district’s child study team will be relocated to Colonial Square shopping center to convert office space back into classrooms.
Student representatives provided updates on various school activities and achievements. High school representative Gwen Chansey reported on students of the month, newly elected class officers, fall sports teams, and homecoming week plans. Middle school representative Noah Bundy introduced himself and detailed student council elections, fall sports records, and upcoming events focused on respect and anti-violence.
The board then moved on to routine financial and personnel matters, including the approval of resignations, retirements, extra duty appointments, and professional development requests. Adjustmentsttention was given to maintaining compliance with state mandates and ensuring the district’s operational efficiency.
A notable public comment came from a resident named Edie, who raised concerns about the board’s agenda distribution, student suicide prevention policies, and the need for a syllabus requirement for each class. She emphasized the importance of trained personnel in critical situations and the challenges parents face in obtaining information about their children’s education.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgments and expressions of gratitude from board members and Cappello, highlighting the district’s achievements and the contributions of teachers, administrators, and support staff. The session ended on a positive note, with a motion to adjourn being approved unanimously.
