- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Holmdel Town Council approved an ordinance to convey an access easement for the Crawford Hill property to Monmouth County. This decision was made to ensure the county’s access to the property, which is now encumbered by a deed of open space easement, following their financial contribution to the township. The meeting also covered updates on various community programs and events, including transportation issues and recreational activities.
During the public hearing on Ordinance 2024-8, which approves the conveyance of an easement interest in the Crawford Hill property to Monmouth County, Ralph raised concerns about the clarity of the ordinance’s title. He noted that the agenda materials lacked a detailed explanation of the easement being granted. The township’s representative explained that the ordinance ensures the county’s right to use the access easement on lot seven, which serves as the roadway in front of the former Nokia building. This explanation aimed to clarify that the ordinance was a housekeeping measure to formalize the county’s access rights in exchange for their funding.
In other business, the council approved two additional resolutions: one authorizing a contract with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and another with CME Engineering for traffic study services related to ongoing litigation. These resolutions were passed following a review by the council members.
The council also addressed various community updates. The Holmdel Library reported over 2,491 items checked out in September and 3,570 visitors, along with numerous reference questions and private room uses. Transportation and busing issues within the school district were discussed, noting that many initial challenges had been resolved with ongoing assistance from the Holmdel Police Department.
In the athletics department, the high school field hockey team celebrated its first two wins of the season, and the girls’ tennis team remains undefeated. Middle school sports have also commenced, with various teams competing. The school district’s extracurricular activities are in full swing, including new clubs and preparations for theater productions.
The recreation department highlighted several upcoming events, including the Harvest Fest at Bayonet Farm and trick-or-treating events. The department also announced the opening of new pickleball and tennis programs, with classes to be held on Saturday afternoons.
Finally, the council recognized the passing of former Holmdel Mayor Joseph V. Papo, who served from 1983 to 1985, extending thoughts and prayers to his loved ones.
The meeting concluded with a public comment period, during which Patrick inquired about a previous meeting with the New Jersey Historical Society. A council member reported that representatives from the state had visited the site, discussed its historical relevance, and endorsed the township’s plans to develop the property into a park.
