- Meeting Overview:
The recent Paterson City Council virtual meeting was marked by residents expressing concerns over noise disturbances and the accessibility of local recreational spaces, highlighting ongoing issues with law enforcement responses and community engagement.
Shay Brown, a resident of East 25th Street, addressed the council regarding the persistent noise disturbances and public disorder in her neighborhood. Brown detailed how gatherings without street permits have been causing chaos, with individuals setting up loudspeakers and operating motorcycles and four-wheelers. These gatherings often continue until the early hours of the morning, severely affecting the quality of life for residents. Brown stated, “If you search for my number in the Paterson Police dispatch, you will see how many times I call,” underscoring her frustration with the lack of effective police intervention.
Brown’s testimony revealed a significant gap in the enforcement of local noise ordinances and the provision of a peaceful environment for residents. She described how the disturbances have been ongoing for years, mentioning the impact on her household, including her children who frequently complain about the noise and litter left behind, such as beer cans and red cups. Brown recounted instances where police arrived at the scene but failed to take appropriate action, driving off without addressing the situation. “It’s insane,” she remarked.
The council members acknowledged the issues raised by Brown and other residents, emphasizing the need for more effective enforcement of local regulations. One council member noted the prevalence of loud music and disturbances from Friday through Monday morning. Another council member proposed revisiting the concept of quality of life units within the police department.
John Cucho, another resident, raised concerns about the future of the tennis court near School 25 on Vernon Avenue. He expressed apprehension that potential renovations might limit community access to the space, which is currently used for various activities, including tennis, soccer, and volleyball. Cucho emphasized the importance of keeping the court open and accessible, particularly for local teenagers. “I would be afraid that that’s going to get locked up,” he said, urging the council to ensure that renovations do not lead to increased restrictions.
Council members generally agreed with Cucho’s perspective, stating that the space should remain accessible to the public unless designated for a specific event requiring a permit. There was a consensus on the need for collaboration with the school district to keep the park open daily, especially on weekends when access is often restricted due to custodial concerns.
Councilman MD Forid Uddin shared his observations about the recurring issue of block parties throughout the city. He recounted an incident involving a large gathering at a mechanics shop, where police response was delayed. Uddin remarked, “By the time police showed up, the party is over,” underscoring the need for improved policing strategies.
The meeting continued with the council members voting to close the public comment portion, with a motion made and seconded, followed by a roll call. The council president expressed gratitude for the cooperation of council colleagues during the meeting, which was conducted virtually. Announcements were made regarding upcoming community events, and there was a reminder for the council to continue addressing the issues raised by residents.
