- Meeting Overview:
The Vineland School Board meeting saw discussions on the challenges within the special education framework, as well as celebrations of achievements in mentorship programs and educational accolades. Teachers voiced concerns about the In-Class Resource (ICR) program, emphasizing staffing shortages, while accolades were given for mentorship initiatives and a county teacher award.
A prominent topic at the meeting was the issues plaguing the special education program, particularly the ICR classrooms for fourth and fifth grades. Teachers Patricia Aesio and Jennifer Smith addressed the board about the dire state of these classrooms, highlighting that class sizes exceeded recommended limits and that inadequate staffing compromised student support. Aesio pointedly stated, “It is unacceptable what is happening right now,” articulating the negative impact of reduced support on students’ educational experiences. Smith echoed this sentiment, stressing that classes were out of compliance with established student-to-teacher ratios and underscoring the frustration among educators who are unable to meet their students’ needs.
Adding to the urgency, Regina Merkel outlined the repercussions of splitting one special education teacher between grade levels, which resulted in a significant reduction in available resources. She noted that older students were receiving far less support compared to younger students, with only 60 minutes of English Language Arts (ELA) and 30 minutes of math support. Merkel highlighted that this placed undue pressure on general education teachers to modify instruction without appropriate training.
Leanne Burns further emphasized the critical situation, describing the challenges of providing adequate instruction to students reading below grade level due to the lack of time and resources. She stressed the necessity of maintaining a supportive environment for special needs students, as the current system deprives them of essential educational connections. The teachers’ collective comments culminated in a plea for the board to intervene and rectify staffing deficiencies to ensure that students receive the education they deserve.
In addition to addressing these concerns, the meeting celebrated achievements within the district. Mr. Greco, principal of Durand Elementary School, recognized Carolina Mills as the Cumberland County Teacher of the Year. Mills’s dedication to her ESL students was highlighted, and her recognition as a state finalist was a source of pride for the district.
The meeting also spotlighted the success of the “Mentors on the Green” summer program. Director for Special Projects and Operations, Mr. Bermudes, and Mr. Cooper presented certificates to the program’s participants. Cooper enthusiastically described the program’s high graduation rate and its unique approach of integrating life lessons through golf, stating, “It is about ‘The Game of Life’ rather than just the sport itself.” A parent, Millie, shared how the program transformed her initially uninterested children into engaged participants, emphasizing the importance of providing alternative activities for children not inclined toward traditional sports.
The public comment section featured Michaela Giuliani, senior class president, who highlighted successful student engagement events at Vineland High School, including a club fair and celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month. However, the focus quickly returned to the special education challenges, with Thomas McCann and teachers voicing concerns about staffing and compliance issues in ICR classrooms.
