Caston G. was recognized for scoring a perfect 475 on the U.S. History exam, an extraordinary achievement that the board member described as rare. Caston received a letter from the commissioner of education, along with a certificate and a framed commemorative item.

Another student from Hosford School was honored for a perfect score in fourth-grade mathematics. The board member humorously acknowledged his past role as the student’s basketball coach, attributing part of the student’s success to family support.

The meeting also introduced Heather Hudson, the new board attorney, who was attending her first meeting. Her extensive experience, including her role as president of the School Attorney Association, was highlighted by a board member.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to honoring James Flowers, who has served on the board since 2002. A board member recalled his initial encounters with Flowers, noting his longstanding commitment to the community and the school district. Flowers was praised for his honesty and his ability to engage effectively with the community. The tribute included an introduction of Flowers’ family to the board, underscoring his personal contributions and community involvement. The board member commended Flowers for being a “people person,” emphasizing his skill in addressing both positive and negative feedback from constituents.

In addition to celebrations and farewells, the board addressed several operational matters. An update from the district safety specialist was presented. The safety specialist confirmed that all schools had been inspected, with no findings at several locations and only minor issues at one school that were immediately addressed.

The meeting also touched on upcoming events, including a Veterans Day program scheduled for November 8, which would feature a meal prepared by the culinary program. The district advisory meeting, rescheduled due to Hurricane Colen, was announced for October 9. Plans for homecoming activities from October 16-18, including a parade and football game, were detailed, emphasizing the community spirit and student involvement.

The board discussed logistical arrangements for educational facilities, including updates on the softball and football fields. This included ongoing improvements, locker installations, and bleacher upgrades. There was also mention of a professional development day for staff.

A motion was made to combine the November organizational meeting with the monthly meeting, to be attended by Judge Bufano for the swearing-in of new board members. This meeting, set for November 19, would also include the election of new board positions and be followed by a farewell lunch for Flowers on November 18, catered by the culinary class.
