- Meeting Overview:
The Mahwah School Board meeting highlighted significant achievements, including high state rankings for the district schools and the announcement of a strategic planning initiative for 2025-2030. Superintendent Michael DeTuro emphasized the district’s 23rd place ranking out of over 388 New Jersey school districts and MAA High School’s impressive 43rd position among 498 public high schools statewide. These rankings, which include both public and private institutions, also placed MAA High School ninth in Bergen County.
In addition to celebrating these achievements, DeTuro introduced the district’s upcoming strategic planning initiative that will span from 2025 to 2030. This plan aims to reflect on past successes while gathering community input to shape future goals. The initiative will focus on enhancing educational outcomes and community engagement. Part of this forward-thinking approach involves collaboration with the Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization, which received a $100,000 grant for education and sustainability projects. These efforts included a recent field trip for third graders, integrating sustainable practices and seasonal eating into their curriculum.
The board also discussed several commendations within the district. At MAA High School, students Ryan Richards, Justin Saves, and Niti Sha were named commended students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. A recent MAA High School graduate, Noah Wtel, was recognized for his philanthropic efforts, donating $500 to the Habitat for Humanity club to support local housing initiatives. In further recognition, the district celebrated its inclusion on the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll for the 2023-2024 school year, an accolade that acknowledges the school’s efforts in increasing student participation in AP courses.
This collaboration will see two physical education teachers receive training in hands-only CPR, with the aim of equipping students with essential life-saving skills. This initiative, made possible by a proactive parent, will also provide educational kits to enhance students’ learning experiences.
In other board discussions, Carrie Prun presented a project proposal for her Girl Scout Gold Award. The board expressed interest in her project, recognizing the importance of involving students in community service and leadership endeavors.
The meeting also addressed operational updates, including the approval of an HVAC unit at Joyce Kilmer School, with the state reimbursing 40% of the cost. The retirement of Miss Deborah Rybeck was acknowledged, honoring her contributions to student transportation and her lasting impact on the community. Additionally, financial updates were provided, with the business administrator noting the completion of the auditors’ onsite work and the scheduling of a bid opening for a waterman replacement at the athletic fields.
Public participation was encouraged, though the session saw limited engagement. The board expressed gratitude to attendees, acknowledging the concurrent events that might have impacted participation.
