- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, New Ulm Library Board adopted the 2025 Library fees and fines schedule, which notably eliminates meeting room and equipment rental fees. This decision marks a substantial change in the library’s operations.
During the recent meeting, the board discussed and approved resolution number 2024 31, which pertained to the updated fees and fines schedule. This was the second reading of the resolution. The library director proposed the new schedule, highlighting the decision to remove fees associated with meeting room and equipment rentals. Additionally, the updated schedule included a note clarifying that there would be no charge for fax transmissions to local toll-free numbers or for cover sheets. After a brief discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and met with unanimous approval from the board members present.
The board then addressed resolution number 2024 32, accepting a $1,090 share of a $100,000 collection development grant awarded by the Traverse des Sioux Regional Library Board. This grant will help enhance the library’s nonfiction collections, providing necessary updates to the physical book offerings. It was emphasized that the funds were specifically designated for physical books, not digital formats, and needed to be utilized by June 2025. The library will coordinate with TDS to facilitate the purchasing process.
Further discussions revolved around resolution number 2024 33, which acknowledged donations and memorials received from July 1 to September 30, 2024. The board expressed gratitude for community support, particularly noting donations made in memory of former library employee Barb Runk. The library director confirmed that memorial donations could be marked in purchased books upon request from donors.
A dormant issue concerning the Rudy Good memorial fund was also addressed. The library director reported that the $1,545.56 fund would now be used for book purchases, following discussions with the Good family regarding the intended use of the memorial funds. The board expressed satisfaction in finally taking action on these resources.
Resolution number 2024 34 proposed utilizing the library’s fund balance to cover an unbudgeted sprinkler inspection expense. Olympic Fire Protection quoted the inspection at $1,979, addressing the need to test the 50-year-old sprinkler system. The library director recommended utilizing the fund balance for this expense, noting that future inspections might not be necessary for another 10 to 20 years. The board discussed potential future costs related to sprinkler head replacements and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety regulations. A motion was made and seconded to approve the use of funds for the inspection, receiving unanimous support.
In other agenda items, the library reported the successful replacement of its panic button system and preparations for the annual used book sale scheduled for November 7-9. Additionally, the library received equipment for the memory lab, funded by the Melon Foundation, including a new microfilm scanner and a digitization computer.
The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming events, such as a family history fair on October 17, a no-school movie screening on October 18, and a creative workshop titled “Making Art in Evil Times” on October 24. A stuffed animal sleepover event was also planned for October 28, targeting children aged 2 to 8, with registration required.
