Arthur proposed exploring options to consolidate special education services with other districts to reduce costs and questioned whether therapy session expenses could be offset by billing parents’ health insurance. The board clarified that tuition costs are tied to the specialized services required for certain students and that electric vehicle chargers are intended for district facilities and buses. Therapy expenditures were justified as necessary mental health support sourced from an external vendor.

The board also addressed the proposed purchase of a $58,000 pickup truck for the maintenance department. Arthur sought clarification on whether this was a replacement vehicle and the fate of the old truck. The board explained that this purchase was part of a vehicle replacement plan aimed at maintaining operational efficiency, especially during adverse weather conditions. Efforts to optimize transportation costs through collaboration with neighboring districts were also confirmed.

In parallel, the Leonia School Board engaged in a discussion about strategic planning and goal-setting for the district. Emphasis was placed on creating measurable goals that align with the anticipated outcomes of the district’s strategic planning process. A proposal was made for each committee to incorporate strategic planning discussions into their meetings and report on their contributions in future sessions. The conversation also considered rephrasing goals to reflect the creation of a district strategic plan.

The meeting also included updates on recent facility improvements, such as repairs to the gym floor at Leonia High School and the addition of basketball lines to the Leonia Middle School blacktop.

The business office reported on the upcoming audit for the 2023-2024 fiscal year and outlined key dates for the 2025-2026 budget process. The Assessed State Aid data collection was noted as a critical element in determining the district’s state aid entitlement, with a snapshot date set for October 15.
