- Meeting Overview:
The recent Brick Town Council meeting focused on residents’ environmental concerns and celebrated notable community events. Key topics included addressing air pollution near local neighborhoods and acknowledging the successful execution of town festivities.
Resident John Sluka’s impassioned appeal during the public comment section brought attention to the issue of air pollution affecting neighborhoods like Evergreen Woods and Brick High School. Sluka detailed the adverse impacts of pollutants from the Garden State Parkway, emphasizing their detrimental effects on vulnerable populations, including seniors and children. He argued that despite noise levels conforming to government standards, ambient air pollution continues to threaten daily life, particularly for those engaging in outdoor activities near bus stops and public areas. Sluka advocated for increased foliage and barriers along the Parkway, describing pollution as “the unseen killer” and urging immediate action to curb its harmful effects.
Following the public comment period, the council shifted focus to commend the successful organization of recent community events, namely the Trunk or Treat and Fall Fest. These events, held on consecutive weekends, drew significant participation from both residents and township departments. The Trunk or Treat event saw over 100 cars participating, with families decorating vehicles and distributing candy. The mayor highlighted the cooperative efforts of departments such as Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and emergency services, which were instrumental in the event’s success. DJ Jazzy John’s musical contributions added to the festive atmosphere.
The Fall Fest, held the day after Trunk or Treat, continued the celebration with various activities, including games organized by local students and organizations, a cornhole tournament, and diverse food trucks. The event concluded with a fireworks display. The council expressed optimism for the continuation of these events in the coming years.
Council members echoed the mayor’s sentiments, commending the township employees for their dedication to organizing these events. They highlighted the positive impact on the community, with Councilwoman Pomeranz noting the library’s underutilized resources and the convenience of online library card applications. Her appreciation was shared by Councilwoman D Young, who reflected on the enjoyable atmosphere and favorable weather that contributed to the successful weekend. Councilman Pinan expressed personal enjoyment of the Trunk or Treat event, emphasizing the excitement surrounding Halloween festivities and mentioning an upcoming October 29th library event focused on encouraging creativity.
In addition to community events, the council addressed several resolutions and ordinances aimed at enhancing township services. A key resolution involved amending the agreement with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres Program, resulting in an anticipated increase of $1.4 million for property acquisition to preserve open space. The council also authorized shared services agreements with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office for a driving while intoxicated enforcement program and a drug recognition expert callout program.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to amend the Township Code related to the registration of foreclosed and vacant properties. This amendment reflects an ongoing effort to manage vacant properties since 2018.
