- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Union County Board of Commissioners meeting, financial concerns and community initiatives took center stage, with discussions on the county’s budget, resolutions impacting local development, and upcoming public events.
One of the most discussions revolved around the county’s financial situation, particularly in light of past criticisms concerning its AAA bond rating and surplus. This topic sparked debate, as it was noted that some had previously criticized the county for having “too much surplus,” pointing to a potential misunderstanding of the county’s fiscal status. Residents raised questions about the county’s financial management, specifically concerning state funding allocations and budget cuts, during public comments.
Bruce Patterson from Garwood expressed concerns regarding several resolutions that could potentially impact the county’s budget. He highlighted resolution 771, which proposed increasing a contract with CME Associates by $50,000 for on-call engineering services, noting a lack of transparency in billing details. Patterson emphasized that residents should not need to file Open Public Records Act requests to understand these charges. He also questioned resolution 778, which involves accepting $2 million from the state for unspecified costs, expressing alarm over the implications for county finances during a hiring freeze and budget constraints.
Patterson further acknowledged resolution 781, praising efforts to secure $125,000 for the Clark Reservoir project, but voiced skepticism about resolution 786, which proposed a $400,000 increase to a contract with AT&T Sports without detailed justification. Concerns were also raised about resolution 794, related to the PBA Sheriff’s contract and election-related contracts, with questions on potential hidden costs for taxpayers. The county manager addressed these concerns, assuring that additional information had been provided to clarify public queries and that the financial aspects of state funding resolutions were consistent with state language.
In addition to financial matters, the meeting also focused on community events and services. Commissioner Kowalski promoted the “Four Centuries in a Weekend” event, encouraging residents to explore historical sites across the county. Kowalski highlighted various family-friendly activities planned for the event, emphasizing its funding by Union County and the New Jersey Historical Commission. Moreover, Commissioner Williams announced a free scrap metal recycling drop-off event, urging residents to participate safely, and emphasized the significance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Commissioner Granados discussed the upcoming Union County Food Security Summit, aimed at addressing food insecurity through collaboration among local organizations. The summit is expected to foster discussions and solutions to combat hunger in the community. As part of the meeting’s focus on community engagement, an upcoming election was highlighted, with a call for residents to apply as poll workers, particularly bilingual individuals, to support the electoral process.
Additionally, the meeting featured discussions on fall activities organized by the Department of Parks and Recreation, including hay rides and a Halloween bash for residents with disabilities. These events aim to foster community spirit and provide entertainment for families across the county.
The meeting also included updates on safety initiatives, such as the Safe Streets for All action plan, which seeks to improve roadway safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This plan involves collaboration with various municipalities to enhance safety measures across Union County.
