- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Providence Borough Council meeting, residents expressed their opposition to proposed sidewalk installations on Laurel and Brookside Drives, citing safety, environmental, and community engagement concerns.
The primary focus of the meeting was the proposed sidewalk on Laurel Drive. Residents voiced their apprehension about the current design, which they argued would place children in potentially hazardous situations. Specifically, the sidewalk is planned on the north side of Laurel Drive, while the school is located to the west. This design would require children to cross at a dangerous intersection where vehicles turn onto Laurel Drive, increasing the risk of accidents. A resident shared an interaction with borough engineer Don Hartman from Aurora and Associates, who reportedly acknowledged that the sidewalk’s placement did not make logical sense given the school’s location.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the environmental impact of removing mature trees and relocating utility poles on Laurel Drive. Residents emphasized that these trees play a role in managing the local high water table, and their removal could exacerbate water drainage issues. This was echoed by other residents worried about the potential disruption to sump pumps and drainage systems, which could result in costly damages.
Brookside Drive residents also voiced strong opposition to the proposed sidewalk, questioning its necessity given the current traffic conditions. Many shared personal experiences of safely walking to school without sidewalks and suggested alternative measures such as electronic speed signs or speed bumps to address any potential traffic hazards. They argued that the wide roads provided sufficient space for both pedestrians and vehicles.
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the perceived lack of adequate communication and community engagement regarding the sidewalk proposals. Residents expressed frustration over not being fully informed about the plans and called for a plan outlining the reasons behind the initiative. They emphasized the importance of transparency and community input in decision-making processes.
In response, council members acknowledged the concerns and emphasized that the sidewalk initiative stemmed from a “Safe Routes to School Grant” aimed at promoting walking among children and enhancing safety. They assured residents that their feedback would be considered and encouraged ongoing communication between residents and the council.
Beyond sidewalk concerns, the council discussed several other topics, including updates on community projects like Oakwood Park improvements and the pickleball courts. The Mayor provided an update on the borough’s responsibility for additional affordable housing units, noting the challenges posed by the above-average obligation. The meeting also touched on sustainability efforts, with a subcommittee working towards achieving a higher certification level for the municipality.
The council addressed infrastructure updates, specifically concerning South Street, where paving is planned before winter, and a comprehensive effort will follow in spring. Public Works has begun leaf collection, and residents were reminded to obtain permits by November 12th.
