- Meeting Overview:
The recent Middleborough School Committee meeting addressed concerns surrounding teacher retention and student behavior, while also recognizing academic progress in the district. Teacher retention emerged as a issue, with discussions on developing a methodology to track and improve retention rates. The meeting also highlighted concerns from parents about student behavior and transportation inefficiencies, alongside the acknowledgment of state-recognized academic achievements.
The committee’s conversation on teacher retention revealed fluctuations in the district’s retention rates over recent years, with a notable downturn in 2021. A proposal was made to request the superintendent to develop a framework for collecting and understanding retention data. This would involve defining specific parameters for data collection, such as the timing of data capture and categorization of reasons for departures.
There was consensus among committee members on the need to refine the methodology before implementation. The absence of a dedicated human resources department was noted as a significant hurdle in developing a comprehensive exit survey to gather more nuanced insights into why teachers leave. A task force, possibly comprising both school committee and district members, was suggested to explore the feasibility of implementing such a survey, with an emphasis on potentially incorporating industry-standard definitions and practices.
In addition to teacher retention, the meeting addressed parents’ concerns over student behavior and transportation. One parent, Jed Newhook, described behavior issues at the elementary level as “outrageous,” citing staff distress and a lack of support from the administration. This was echoed by Treasure Gonzalez, who highlighted inefficiencies in the transportation system, particularly affecting her son, who faces developmental delays. Gonzalez questioned the adequacy of current transportation arrangements, calling for adjustments to better serve young and vulnerable students.
Despite these challenges, the meeting also acknowledged the district’s academic progress. State assessments recognized Middleborough for substantial growth in English, math, and science metrics. The district’s designation as making “substantial progress” toward its goals, including a reduction in chronic absenteeism, was highlighted. School committee members discussed ongoing efforts to maintain and build on this progress through data-driven decision-making and curriculum development.
Presentations by principals outlined specific goals, such as fostering inclusive environments, improving literacy and math instruction through targeted interventions, and promoting a culture of teamwork. These plans are supported by data teams that meet regularly to assess progress and adjust strategies as needed. The adoption of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and the use of data dashboards like Panorama were noted as key tools in these efforts.
The meeting also touched on upcoming community events and initiatives aimed at engaging students and families, such as the Halloween Fest and leadership events organized by the Middleborough High School Student Council.
