- Meeting Overview:
The recent Allendale Borough Council meeting featured a unique “Mayor for a Day” event as well as discussions on infrastructure issues, including sewer challenges and water services. In addition, the council addressed several legislative matters, community initiatives, and projects aimed at enhancing local facilities.
The council meeting gained special attention as Ariana Elise Haish was sworn in as “Mayor for a Day,” an initiative designed to engage young residents in local governance. During the ceremony, Ariana took an oath, guided by the current mayor, and was celebrated with a proclamation naming October 3rd as “Mayor Ariana Elise Haish Day” in Allendale. The proclamation acknowledged Ariana’s interests and aspirations, encouraging community engagement among young residents. Following the ceremony, the council returned to regular business, approving ordinance 24-15 to fix salaries for borough officers and employees for 2024 and ordinance 24-16 to establish a business insurance registry, both passing without opposition.
The council also tackled significant infrastructure challenges, particularly related to sewer and water services. With substantial developments anticipated, such as the project from Stle River, the council recognized the need to ensure that the sewer infrastructure could accommodate future demands. A meeting is scheduled for October 8th to further address these issues and prepare for fair share rounds. Meanwhile, discussions with Ramsey are expected to begin in November to negotiate relevant contracts.
Water services provided by Violia presented another concern, with temporary treatment solutions currently in place. Issues related to the water supply at the New Street facility and Crescent were highlighted, and discussions with Violia’s engineering team are ongoing. A notable concern arose regarding a 12.25% rate increase effective June 1st, 2024, after a previous agreement anticipated a 0% increase this year. The council is pursuing discussions with the Board of Public Utilities to address this challenge and inform residents accordingly.
The meeting also covered several community initiatives, including reports from the Lee Memorial Library outlining a variety of programs for October, such as adult lectures and children’s activities. The Green Team announced a collection event for composting fall decorations, scheduled for November.
Council members discussed various ongoing projects, including the community center on West Crescent. The project, nearing completion, features a modern entrance and security system, though further internal work remains. Enhancements to the community center gym were also noted, including the painting of pickleball lines and refinishing the gym floor. Additionally, the mural project at the community center is progressing, with local students’ clay pieces being incorporated into the design.
In legislative matters, the council addressed the business insurance registry ordinance, set to commence on January 1st, with an annual registration fee of $25. Discussions on updating filming permit fees are also underway, with a draft ordinance being prepared for review.
Public safety was another focus, with the police department updating its mass notification database and collaborating with the borough clerk for the upcoming election. The department hosted a successful “Ice Cream with the Mayor” event, fostering community ties.
Further discussions included the revision of the noise ordinance, the finalization of cell tower contracts, and the Monell litigation settlement conference scheduled for October 28th. The council expressed optimism for a positive outcome to avoid prolonged litigation related to fair share housing.
In closing remarks, the council emphasized the importance of technological adaptation, such as using Microsoft Teams to improve efficiency and data management. The meeting concluded with lighthearted comments from young attendees.
