- Meeting Overview:
The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee meeting focused on the district’s Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) results, the growth and achievements of the high school’s DECA program, and a surprise opportunity to participate in the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s (MSBA) Accelerated Repair Program for the high school roof.
The meeting prominently featured a comprehensive presentation on the district’s MCAS results, revealing mixed performance trends across various grades and subjects. While third-grade math and science scores in grades five and ten showed improvement, overall district performance remained slightly below state averages, notably in English Language Arts (ELA). It was highlighted that 62% of students met or exceeded expectations in ELA, 57% in math, and 65% in science for grades five and eight. Concerns were raised about the district’s achievement gap, particularly for students with disabilities, as well as the need for improved digital learning practices, especially at Cutler Elementary School. There, it was reported that students struggled with the digital format of MCAS tests due to inadequate familiarity with necessary online tools.
The principal of one elementary school pointed out that while science scores were favorable, ELA scores were concerning, prompting an investigation into underlying issues. The principal emphasized the need for a shift in science testing methodologies to more hands-on experimental tasks and highlighted the challenges students face in writing. The importance of addressing foundational skills in math, such as fractions, was also discussed, with the introduction of a new curriculum, Eureka Math Squared, aimed at bridging instructional gaps.
Amid these academic evaluations, the committee celebrated the achievements of the high school’s DECA program, which has grown to become the largest club with over 252 members. DECA officers presented their initiatives, including competitions and community involvement projects, highlighting the significant participation of new members and the structured support provided through mentorship teams. The students shared their successes in district and state competitions and their efforts in improving school engagement through a social squad. The committee expressed appreciation for their presentation, noting the broad spectrum of opportunities available through DECA.
In addition to academic and extracurricular discussions, the committee considered a infrastructure development. An unexpected invitation to participate in the MSBA’s Accelerated Repair Program for the high school roof was announced. The roof, described as “very leaky,” requires urgent attention before winter. The project, estimated to cost between three and five million dollars, will depend on a detailed approval process, including documentation and bond funding authorization, set to commence in January 2025. The committee weighed this opportunity against existing projects before proceeding.
Further, the meeting addressed ongoing curriculum improvements, particularly in response to declining ELA scores and the need for enhanced math instruction. The principal of the middle school reported positive trends, with the school ranking in the 95th percentile among non-high schools in Massachusetts. Despite some declines in specific grades, the school achieved significant growth and met improvement targets, particularly in students with disabilities.
The committee also received updates on various school activities and achievements, including an upcoming high school musical and the successes of fall athletic teams. The girls’ soccer team, for example, was recognized for their championship title, while the boys’ soccer and golf teams also celebrated accomplishments.
