- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Mounds View School Board meeting, the spotlight was on Chipa Middle School’s prestigious recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence for 2024. This significant accolade was awarded at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., marking Chipa as the third school in the district to receive such an honor, following Irondale High School and Pike Lake Elementary. Superintendent Chris Lennox expressed pride in representing the district at the event, emphasizing the school’s achievements in educational excellence.
The meeting also highlighted a robust financial report for the district. An audit for the fiscal year 2023-2024 was presented and approved without opposition. The audit revealed a clean opinion on the district’s financial statements. Notably, the district’s general fund revenues surpassed the budget by approximately $4 million, primarily due to unexpected state funding increases. Expenditures were about $10 million under budget, attributed to conservative budgeting. The district’s cash and investment balances rose to $80 million, with an unassigned fund balance aligning with policy requirements.
In addition to financial matters, the board discussed strategies for early childhood outreach. This initiative includes community engagement activities, such as presence at local festivals and the distribution of welcome packets containing resources and district-branded onesies. The focus is on building early relationships with families and ensuring steady growth in kindergarten enrollment. Outreach efforts also extend to developmental screenings and information about preschool enrollment.
The board also approved non-resident enrollment options for the 2025-2026 school year. The decision aims to accommodate students from outside the district, reflecting confidence in the district’s ability to manage increased enrollment.
Student achievements were front and center, with recognition of National Merit Scholars and commendations for fall sports teams. Principal Rob Reitz shared that 16 students were recognized as commended National Merit Scholars, and three students introduced themselves as semifinalists. Various student athletes and band members reported on their teams’ successes, including the Mounds View marching band’s first-place win at Youth in Music and the girls’ tennis team’s fourth-place finish at the state tournament.
The meeting also included a discussion about kindergarten programming. A comprehensive plan was outlined, featuring a “Day in the Life” video and events like “Popsicles on the Playground” to help incoming kindergarteners and their families acclimate to school life. The campaign aims to alleviate concerns for parents and children while promoting a welcoming school environment.
Community engagement was further emphasized through updates from the Association of Metropolitan School Districts and the 916 Intermediate School District. Topics included innovative strategies for coordinating services for students and policy updates on textbooks, attendance, and non-discrimination. The meeting concluded with member reports recounting attendance at community events and celebrations of the district’s successes.
