Acushnet Conservation Commission Faces Project Delays and Resignation of Key Member
- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Conservation Commission meeting highlighted significant events including a delay in a solar project, concerns over wetland replication success, and the resignation of a key member. The meeting also addressed pending litigation in an executive session.
A major topic of discussion was the review of a draft environmental impact report by the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife concerning an extension of a transmission line by NSTAR Electric Company. The project, which spans from Mendle Road in Acushnet to Crystal Spring substation in Map Poit, faces scrutiny as the Division has not received a required MESA filing. The project is also under review for potential impacts on the Eastern Box Turtle habitat. The Commission is awaiting further developments as the public agency comment period progresses.
In old business, the public hearing for a notice of intent and stormwater application for a solar project at White’s Farm on Middle Road was continued to December 11th. The applicant, represented by Sarah Stern, is working with Beals and Thomas on peer review comments. The project proposes a ground-mounted solar array in open fields within a 100-foot buffer zone to a bordering vegetated wetland.
A wetland replication project at a site on Lonetree Road was also discussed. The project has experienced mixed success with the presence of invasive species such as mugwort. Discussions with the site representative explored options for managing these invasives, including cutting back during the growing season and introducing more wetland plants. The Commission plans to further investigate the site’s replication plan and potential changes in hydrology that may have contributed to the invasion.
Additionally, the Commission was informed of a draft bylaw for accessory dwelling units being developed by the planning board. The draft aims to facilitate collaboration among town boards and is part of ongoing efforts to streamline local governance.
In personnel updates, a commission member announced their resignation, effective January 16th, citing personal commitments and the desire to prioritize family time.
