- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Littleton School Committee delved into several issues, with discussions focusing on improving school safety protocols and enhancing student performance metrics. The committee also explored the potential addition of a second School Resource Officer (SRO) to address safety and behavioral challenges more effectively. The meeting covered a range of topics from student assessments to building projects, providing an overview of ongoing initiatives and future plans.
The need for a second School Resource Officer was a key topic of discussion. The current resource officer highlighted difficulties in managing time across multiple schools. The officer emphasized the importance of building relationships with students, noting that familiar faces in schools contribute positively to the environment. There was a particular focus on addressing issues such as vaping and behavioral problems, with the officer expressing a desire to be more involved in health classes and school activities. The discussion revealed plans for further exploration of this proposal at a meeting scheduled for December 13, where officials would present a detailed rationale, referencing past budget challenges and the need for adequate resources to support current safety needs.
Accompanying the safety discussion was an update on the school’s emergency protocols. A presentation by local law enforcement detailed the shift from the Alice protocol to a new system called Alert, which focuses on avoidance, isolation, informing authorities, and reacting to threats. This protocol aims to simplify emergency responses for students and staff, moving away from the countering emphasis of the previous system. The new approach is designed to be more age-appropriate, addressing concerns about the intensity of previous drills. The committee was informed about ongoing training for officers, with a commitment to complete certification by the end of the year. A planned tabletop exercise involving local emergency services and school staff will further enhance readiness for potential threats.
Student performance, particularly MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) results, was another major focus. The committee reviewed data indicating a decline in English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with an 8% decrease from the previous year. Among students categorized as “partially meeting” expectations, 74% scored just below the threshold needed to meet standards. Mathematics performance showed similar trends, with 66% of students meeting expectations. Concerns were raised about the decrease in students exceeding expectations, prompting a commitment to strengthen interventions and support for students, particularly those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
In-depth analysis of student growth percentiles revealed both strengths and challenges across various grade levels. Notably, sixth-grade ELA demonstrated significant growth, ranking first among Massachusetts districts, while seventh-grade math showed a substantial increase in students meeting expectations. However, the performance of students on IEPs remained a concern, with discussions emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and curriculum adjustments. The committee acknowledged the complexities of measuring performance across diverse student groups, expressing a commitment to addressing these disparities.
The Shaker Lane building project also featured prominently in the meeting. A recent town presentation outlined the project’s financial implications and design options, with the committee selecting option 3.1, which involves constructing a new building behind the current facility. This decision, pending approval from the Massachusetts School Building Authority, aims to provide a modern learning environment while minimizing disruption to students. The committee emphasized the importance of community involvement in the project, noting previous low turnout at informational sessions and exploring strategies to increase engagement.
Other discussions included a review of the school’s non-discrimination and harassment policy, which was revised to include language related to military and veteran status. The committee voted unanimously to adopt the updated policy. Additionally, the budget subcommittee reported on ongoing efforts to refine the budget, highlighting the need for resources such as the proposed second resource officer and addressing out-of-district tuition challenges.
