- Meeting Overview:
The Sayreville School Board meeting on November 19th prominently featured a celebration of student accomplishments, particularly in athletics, as well as discussions on new school initiatives and infrastructure changes. Key highlights included an impressive undefeated season by the Sayreville High School girls’ team and the successful completion of a significant Eagle Scout project by a high school student.
The meeting began with a recognition of the Sayreville High School girls’ field hockey team, which concluded an unprecedented season with 78 wins and only one loss, clinching the White Division championship for the first time. This historic achievement was marked by five players receiving accolades, including two who earned spots on the All-Conference team. The board expressed its gratitude to the community for their unwavering support during the season’s games. The Sayreville cheerleading team was also honored for winning the Greater Middlesex Conference game day competition, with 33 members participating and securing the highest score among 17 teams. Applause from attendees followed these commendations.
In an inspiring presentation, high school student Elijah Jung detailed his Eagle Scout project, which involved raising $122,000 to build a new playground at Wilson School. Jung’s initiative included various fundraising activities such as pasta dinners, car washes, and a GoFundMe campaign. His efforts resulted in the construction of benches and a Gaga pit, transforming an underutilized area into a vibrant play space. Jung shared the challenges he encountered, stating, “It got gray sometimes,” but highlighted his persistence and teamwork with his troop. Board members lauded Jung’s leadership and dedication, with one member describing him as “an inspiring leader.”
The meeting proceeded to discussions led by various board members on financial and infrastructure updates. These included the replacement of old ventilation units at the high school, installation of new HVAC units, and completion of bids for window replacements at several schools. The board also addressed repairs needed for a damaged light pole at the high school. Additionally, updates on the ongoing audit process were provided, with positive progress reported.
A significant agenda item was the proposal of a contract with Aspire Technology Partners for installing additional security cameras across the district, totaling $62,573. The board also discussed the solar canopy project at the high school, deciding to proceed independently due to challenges with the original contractor, Green Skies. A related contract with Spel Architectural Group for $986 was proposed to ensure project completion.
In the realm of student support, the board considered a contract for GoGuardian Tutor Me, a tutoring software providing 24/7 services for students in grades 6 through 12, at a cost of $43,500. The positive reception of these services in the previous year was noted, and the board emphasized the continued partnership to enhance student support.
Superintendent Dr. Richard Labbe highlighted several key items for board approval, including amended applications for funding under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act. The board was also asked to approve a three-year preschool program plan and the purchase of a refrigerator for the Samsel Upper Elementary School.
In the governance segment, the board discussed appointing a liaison with the Borough of Sayreville for the public library and reviewed the 2024 School Safety and Security Plan. The Department of Education’s upcoming review of district performance was noted, emphasizing the qualitative single accountability continuum (QAC) review cycle.
The personnel section saw discussions on new hires, transfers, and the revival of a step team at the high school. The board expressed pride in these initiatives and mentioned the approval of the Middle School Environmentalist Club, supported by a climate change initiative grant.
During the public comment session, resident Anthony Spato commended the board members for their service and addressed concerns about the politicization of school board elections. Spato suggested returning elections to April and extending public comment time to enhance community engagement. He stressed the importance of focusing on the welfare of children and maintaining transparency and ethical governance.
