- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Dighton Historical Commission confronted issues related to accessibility compliance and preservation, discussed ongoing preservation projects, and deliberated on fundraising efforts for America’s 250th anniversary. The commission also addressed a resignation and approved a new internship position.
The commission’s most pressing challenge centered around ensuring accessibility while preserving the historical integrity of local buildings. Concerns were raised about the width of the main entrance doors, which are not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The commission recognized the need for modifications that would respect the building’s historical significance. This balancing act between compliance and preservation is critical, as the main entrance serves as the primary access point for individuals with disabilities.
Another topic of concern was the condition of the building’s columns. Initially thought to be in better shape, the columns were found to be in worse condition than anticipated. Mike Barby from the highway department was mentioned as the one undertaking the project to preserve them. Discussions included potentially using bolster supports and adjusting the height with a square base to maintain the building’s integrity while addressing the columns’ deterioration.
In addition to preservation issues, the commission focused on the 250th anniversary of America and its associated fundraising efforts. An article for a special town warrant was proposed, suggesting a matching fund arrangement where the town would contribute up to $4,000 if the anniversary committee could raise an equivalent amount. The funds are intended to support a reenactment event, constrained by budget limitations. The committee’s outreach efforts, including participation in local veterans’ events and community festivals, have been met with generally positive responses. Potential fundraising ideas, such as creating a commemorative coin, were also discussed to help meet financial goals.
The commission received a resignation letter from David Marvell, acknowledging his contributions with gratitude. Despite stepping down, Marvell offered to continue assisting the commission, particularly with the studio channel.
During the meeting, the commission also approved an internship request from Samantha Sheer, a UMass Dartmouth student. Sheer is expected to complete 120 hours of unpaid internship work focused on historical research, particularly for the Old Brisco Path brochure and the Nat Cran House’s ownership history. With her professor’s approval, the internship will count for academic credit, and the Town Administrator confirmed there were no restrictions on pursuing this opportunity. The commission unanimously approved the motion to accept Sheer as an intern.
Lastly, the commission shared correspondence from the Massachusetts Historical Commission regarding the Oak Energy Center and Walker Cemetery. This prompted questions about existing protections and whether the commission’s involvement had influenced the project’s protective measures. The engagement with the Massachusetts Historical Commission underscores the local commission’s active role in safeguarding historical sites within the community.
The session concluded with a motion to adjourn, closing at approximately 6:35 PM.
