- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Verona School Board meeting, the district celebrated significant achievements in its Advanced Placement (AP) program, highlighted by Verona High School receiving gold status and the AP Access Award. This award acknowledges schools that ensure the percentage of AP exam takers from underrepresented minority and low-income backgrounds mirrors the school’s overall demographics. Verona High School is one of only two districts in New Jersey to earn this distinction.
The meeting featured a presentation on the AP program, detailing how Verona High School has excelled in offering equitable access to AP courses. The recognition of gold status and the AP Access Award underscored the school’s efforts to provide opportunities for all students, regardless of background, to engage in college-level coursework. Since 2009, the number of AP Scholars at Verona High School has surged from 12 to 103, accounting for about 17% of the student body. This increase highlights the school’s success in fostering a college-oriented culture where over 50% of the graduating class participate in at least one AP exam, with 25% scoring a three or higher, qualifying for college credit.
The board recognized individual students for their outstanding performance in AP courses, awarding honors to AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor, and AP Scholars with Distinction. The presentation emphasized the importance of AP courses not only for those who excel but also for students who may not achieve high scores, as participation alone can better prepare them for college. The board discussed how prior restrictions on AP course access based on performance criteria have been lifted, allowing a wider range of students to benefit from these opportunities.
Further discussions highlighted AP course performance metrics. By the 2022-2023 academic year, 76.5% of students scored a three or higher on AP exams. Courses like AP Human Geography and AP Government and Politics achieved average scores of 3.63 and 4.71, respectively, while AP Computer Science showed significant growth in female participation, with an average score of 3.77 over five years. This success was attributed to dedicated teachers and the district’s inclusive approach to AP enrollment, which contrasts with other districts that enforce entrance exams.
The meeting also celebrated the Verona High School Marching Band for its accomplishments. The band, having won the Mayor’s Cup at West Orange High School and achieved a perfect score at the Virginia Beach Music in the Parks event, was recognized for its resilience and transition from COVID-19 restrictions. Senior band members were introduced, and their contributions were acknowledged, culminating in a chamber performance of “Sleigh Ride” that received audience applause.
A lively student report highlighted various extracurricular achievements, including the VHS cheerleaders’ performances at a New Jersey Devils game and Disney World, as well as the football players’ recognition in the Super Football Conference’s National Red All-Divisions team. The student council’s volleyball tournament fundraiser and the VHS chamber choir’s upcoming performance in New York City were also noted.
In financial matters, the board discussed a proposed rebond referendum expected to save Verona taxpayers approximately $576,500 in interest over seven years. Additionally, the board explored options for a Request for Proposal (RFP) concerning the food service program, debating whether to join the National School Lunch Program or remain independent. The RFP would require vendors to provide options for both scenarios.
The meeting also considered a proposed international trip to China for students studying Mandarin. The trip, planned for spring break to reduce costs, raised concerns about the district’s ability to subsidize students unable to afford the $3,699 fee. The board deliberated the financial implications of new laws mandating district coverage for students who cannot afford field trips, which may influence the decision to proceed with the trip.
Committee reports concluded with the approval of salary guides and various routine motions related to educational and co-curricular items. A proposal to table a policy item due to an incomplete HIB report was passed, and the meeting adjourned with no public comments.
