- Meeting Overview:
The Middletown School Board meeting highlighted several topics, including the district’s celebration of student achievements and the challenges posed by rising budgetary concerns. The meeting also addressed various updates from student representatives, committee reports, and ongoing strategic planning initiatives aimed at enhancing educational experiences within the district.
A notable highlight was the presentation of state audit results by Superintendent Jessica Alfone, which evaluated the district’s performance across several operational areas. The district scored above 80% in all categories, achieving 83% in instruction and program, 96% in fiscal management, 100% in governance, 98% in operations, and 92% in personnel. Alfone emphasized that the 83% in instruction was influenced by student test scores, noting ongoing discussions at the state level regarding the emphasis placed on these scores. Despite challenges in this area, the audit results reflected strong overall performance.
The board also celebrated the district’s schools receiving recognition from U.S. News and World Report. Several elementary schools, including Nutswamp and Lincroft, as well as Fairview Middle School and Village River Plaza, were acknowledged for their excellence.
Student achievements were also prominently featured, with updates presented by representatives from Middletown High School North and South. Paige, a junior from North, reported on a range of accomplishments, such as the selection of sophomores for the Hobie New Jersey Youth Leadership Seminar and the participation of students in the Allshore Honors Choir. She also highlighted the upcoming Winter concert and recognized the field hockey team’s championship game participation. Senior Ryan Miller was honored with the Dwight B. Eisenhower Award for his community influence, and his involvement in a Princeton University conference was noted.
Sophia, representing High School South, shared updates on the school’s homecoming dance and fundraising activities. She highlighted the success of the Esports team, which not only excelled in competitions but also led significant fundraising efforts.
The meeting also addressed several committee reports. The Finance Committee noted the need for board approval to initiate a competitive contract process for before and after-care services as the current contract approaches its end. Rising electric prices and their impact on the budget were discussed, with the district’s solar Power Purchase Agreement serving as a mitigating factor. Budget discussions for the upcoming year began, focusing on projected revenue and budget drivers, while exploring cost-saving options related to bus ridership through transportation waivers from parents.
Facilities improvements were another key topic, with completed projects during the November break including flooring upgrades and HVAC improvements. The Facilities Committee discussed plans for speaker replacements at football stadiums and enhancements to the old front entrance at Ocean Avenue. Improvements to baseball and softball fields in preparation for the spring season were also explored. The district’s successful history of obtaining Local Recreation Improvement Grants was highlighted, with plans to apply for playground upgrades at New Mammoth before the January 31st deadline.
In addition to these reports, the board discussed strategic planning efforts, with a recent meeting aimed at refining the district’s mission, values, and beliefs for the next five years. Stakeholders, including parents and administrators, contributed feedback, which will inform a draft for a more concise mission statement. The superintendent also addressed a concern regarding homework policies, proposing the formation of a committee to ensure consistency and balance, thereby supporting student mental health and academic success.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of various accomplishments, including a successful assembly at Thorne Middle School featuring speaker Tim Rower, who engaged students in discussions about inclusion. A homestay exchange program between Middletown high schools and a school in Spain was also mentioned, fostering cultural exchange among students. The board confirmed the Thanksgiving Day game would proceed as scheduled, with live streaming available for those unable to attend.
