- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Ulm Human Rights Commission meeting, the low participation in the annual poster, essay, and video contest was a significant topic of discussion. The commission received only one poster entry for this year’s contest. Members deliberated on whether to continue the contest next year or explore alternative outreach strategies to connect with school-age children. Suggestions included involving student commissioners to brainstorm new methods of engagement and focusing on different types of outreach instead of contests.
In addition, the commission discussed the upcoming Human Rights Award, with the deadline for nominations set for December 13th. Members noted the difficulty in garnering submissions in past years and proposed increasing visibility by distributing flyers in community spaces such as libraries and coffee shops, as well as leveraging social media to encourage more nominations.
The commission also addressed the student commissioner vacancy, approving the appointment of Kaden Schaer, a 10th grader, to serve on the commission for a two-year term.
Another topic of importance was the inability to sponsor the Wellness Collective’s Free Class Friday due to the organization’s non-profit status. While direct financial support was not possible, the commission expressed interest in exploring future partnerships for awareness activities during Human Rights Awareness Month in December.
