- Meeting Overview:
In the recent regular meeting of the Mayor & Council of the Borough of Waldwick, held on May 23, 2023, several key matters were addressed, ranging from community improvements to the notable rejection of bids for Water Treatment Systems Improvements, which were $2 million off the estimate. Presided over by Mayor Tom Giordano and attended by council members Kathleen E. Cericola, Paul V. Schatz, Donald E. Sciolaro, and Theresa N. Sherman, the meeting saw comprehensive discussions on a variety of subjects.
Mayor Giordano updated attendees on community activities, highlighting the improvements at the pool, installation of the “W” by the Waldwick High School art class, and the Memorial Day Parade. Among other matters, a prominent focus was on the Police Department’s activity, including efforts to combat DWI and the Fire Department’s 17 calls for service.
Mr. Sciolaro’s update on monthly Library Board meeting covered essential topics such as replacing a retiring employee and bathroom renovations. Mrs. Sherman reported on the WALVAC’s contributions, including standby for the 5K, donations for supplies, and recruitment campaigns. Mr. Schatz discussed public works, including the installation of a new boiler, completion of pool projects, and PSEG’s LED lighting project.
Among the resolutions were approvals for various community events and the rejection of all bids for Water Treatment Systems Improvements. Both Mr. Sciolaro and Mrs. Sherman expressed significant disappointment regarding this rejection, seeking an explanation from the engineer without additional costs. Contracts were awarded for different projects, including Borough Hall Parking Lot Expansion and Borough-Wide ADA Curb Ramp Upgrades.
One key issue addressed was Resolution No. 2023-213, emphasizing the need for the tax collector to send out estimated tax bills. An amendment concerning residential permit parking, moved as Ordinance No. 2023-#14, was introduced and passed on first reading, with a scheduled public hearing on June 20, 2023.
In new business, the Council expressed support for S3739/A5402, which would delay the implementation of the fourth round of affordable housing obligations.
The public comment section included appreciation for the Council’s efforts and concerns about water issues, the Planning Board meeting format, and homelessness. Ted Sanzo, in particular, expressed dissatisfaction with delays related to water and called for action against responsible manufacturers.
