This effort involves equipping the council with advanced technology such as integrated cameras and smart board technology to facilitate hybrid programs and support groups. With an invoice of $300 for a tech trainer already received, the council is working on recruiting skilled instructors to lead these programs. Although challenges remain in finding qualified candidates capable of teaching on multiple devices, there is optimism about potential hires. The council anticipates starting technology classes in January, having postponed the original November launch.

Central to this tech initiative is the creation of a 20-unit Chromebook lending library. This program aims to provide seniors with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with digital platforms, thereby bridging the digital divide. The initiative encourages seniors to engage with technology, transitioning from borrowing to eventually owning their devices. To manage this, an end-user agreement is being finalized to outline responsibilities for any lost or damaged devices, with Google Manager introduced as a tool to track and secure the Chromebooks effectively. Discussions around accountability for users in cases of damage or loss highlighted the need to differentiate between accidental and negligent actions.

Another agenda item was the council’s holiday meal program. Despite challenging weather conditions, the Thanksgiving event was successful, with approximately 750 to 800 pounds of turkey prepared and served to around 320 attendees. The council also organized a holiday meal distribution, serving 200 meals within 25 minutes. These efforts were rewarded with time off in exchange for their hours worked, and time and a half compensation.

The council expressed gratitude towards community sponsors such as Early Acts, Fastening Solutions, and the Gardner Lions Club, whose contributions were vital in supporting these holiday meals. Looking ahead, the council plans to host a Christmas meal on December 23rd as a drive-thru service, continuing their tradition of engaging and supporting the local senior community.

Further plans for the holiday season include two upcoming trips. One is a visit to the Rentham Mall, and the other is a performance of “Christmas C” at the Handover Theater scheduled for December 21st. These outings aim to enrich the social experiences of participating seniors, with the center covering ticket pricing and transportation costs. A minimum number of participants is required to justify these arrangements, with hopes to attract at least 40 attendees.

The council also discussed efforts to enhance their social media presence, acknowledging that it still lags behind other nonprofits. A recent hire, Lauren, has been instrumental in increasing outreach, with some posts reaching up to 1,900 views. This increase in engagement is a positive sign of progress, with the council planning new programs for January, including a drum class featuring kahon drums and a ukulele program sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Challenges related to program scheduling were also addressed, as the fully booked calendar reflects a busy and productive environment. Staff members managing reservations and room logistics were recognized for their adaptability in accommodating various events. The distribution of newsletters has increased to better inform the community about programs, and there is interest in new programs, such as the drum class initiated by a newsletter announcement.

Additionally, the potential for student internships was introduced, offering students practical experience while participating in programs at the center. Three students from a nearby institution have already shown interest, with hopes to accommodate more participants.
