- Meeting Overview:
The recent Freehold Regional School Board meeting was highlighted by an extensive celebration of student achievements in academics and athletics, coupled with a farewell to Mr. Boyce, the assistant superintendent and board secretary, who was retiring after 17 years of service. Students from various schools were recognized for their exceptional accomplishments, and Mr. Boyce’s contributions were acknowledged by board members.
The meeting began with recognizing students for their academic and extracurricular achievements. Superintendent Dr. Nicole Hazel expressed pride in the students, emphasizing the supportive relationships within the school community that foster both academic and extracurricular success. The awards ceremony at Howell High School was a focal point, where students were honored for their achievements in the Technology Student Association. Four students received the prestigious National Gold Achievement Award for excellence in service, leadership, STEM immersion, and personal professional development. Among those present to accept their medals were Nicollet Coronia and Ariana Tuni, who received applause from the attendees.
Howell High School also celebrated its National Merit commended scholars, with Xavier Ortega and Sarah Ward among the honorees. Ruby S was recognized as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, ranking in the top one to two percent of test-takers. Recognition extended to the school’s standout athletes, including McKenzie Molo, named First Team All-Shore in girls’ soccer, and Amelia Russo, who excelled in gymnastics.
Manalapan High School’s principal expressed gratitude to the Board of Education and the superintendent while highlighting the school’s National Merit commended scholars. Students achieving perfect scores of 800 on the SAT math section were also recognized. The school celebrated its athletes, including the boys’ cross country team, which won the Central Jersey Group Four state championship.
Recognition continued at Freehold High School, Marlboro High School, and other institutions within the district, celebrating students for their National Merit commendations, athletic achievements, and other accomplishments. Marlboro High School saw a student win first place nationally in the Future Business Leaders of America competition, garnering applause from the audience.
The meeting also spotlighted community service initiatives and the district’s accreditation process. Students from various schools raised a total of $110,000 through fundraising efforts, with notable projects including Thanksgiving meal donations and support for chronic disease research. A representative from the student executive cabinet underscored the importance of student engagement in community service.
The Middle States accreditation visit was another topic of discussion, with the chairman of the accreditation team providing a positive overview of the district, describing it as a “mosaic of learning” and praising the community and professionalism within the schools. This affirmation of the district’s standards and expectations was met with satisfaction by the board members.
A notable moment of the meeting was the farewell to Mr. Boyce, the assistant superintendent and board secretary. After 17 years of service, his departure marked the end of a significant chapter for the district. Mr. Boyce reflected on his tenure, expressing gratitude for his experiences and wishing the best for the organization. Board members echoed these sentiments.
The introduction of Mrs. Coward as a new board member added to the evening’s proceedings. Filling a temporary position, she expressed admiration for the board and the respect she had experienced during her short tenure.
The board also discussed the approval of a collective negotiations agreement with the Freehold Regional High School District Bus Drivers Association, alongside consulting services from Spel Architectural Group for a districtwide capital referendum aimed at enhancing health, safety, and efficiency within the district’s facilities. These discussions are part of a broader initiative, with more details to be addressed in future meetings.
