- Meeting Overview:
The Paterson City Council recently convened to celebrate the liberation of Syria with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony. The event featured speeches from local leaders, religious figures, and community members, emphasizing unity and hope for the future of Syria following the fall of the Assad regime.
The ceremony commenced with a moment of silence to honor those who have suffered under the Assad regime, including detainees and martyrs. The event, held in a cold atmosphere, underscored the resilience and unity of the Syrian people, both in Paterson and globally. The gathering was marked by emotional speeches and expressions of solidarity from various community leaders, including an Imam from the Islamic Center, who praised the perseverance and struggle of the Syrian people. He highlighted the need for continued unity among Syrians of all faiths and backgrounds and called for an end to oppression worldwide.
A key theme during the ceremony was a reflection on Syria’s past and its future. Attendees were reminded of the oppressive rule of the Assad family, starting with Hafez al-Assad in the 1970s, and the subsequent rise of Bashar al-Assad, whose tenure was marked by promises of reform that were unfulfilled and instead characterized by systemic corruption and violence. The ceremony celebrated the eventual downfall of the regime, as the coalition of rebel forces launched a decisive attack, ultimately leading to the liberation of the country.
Mayor Andre Sayegh, who was in attendance, expressed his support for the Syrian community and reiterated Martin Luther King Jr.’s sentiment that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Reflecting on his own diverse heritage, the mayor highlighted the importance of solidarity and unity in the pursuit of justice and democracy in Syria. He commended the courage of Syrian citizens, both abroad and in Paterson, for their persistent fight for freedom and human rights.
