- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Woodbridge School Board meeting, community concern was expressed regarding the district’s transgender policy and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The board also discussed student transportation bids, celebrated student achievements, and faced public comments on educational policy changes and classroom experiences.
The most notable issue during the meeting was the district’s transgender policy, which drew passionate responses from the community. A speaker from the Hopel section criticized the policy, describing it as “cruel” and “confusing for children.” This individual argued that the policy misleads children about the nature of gender. The speaker claimed an increase in young women exploring transgender identities, attributing this trend to emotional stresses during lockdowns, and urged the board to reconsider a policy they believe “criminalizes Parenthood” by allowing children to make identity decisions without parental involvement. Another speaker echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for parental engagement in such significant aspects of a child’s life.
Support for these viewpoints was further evidenced when another speaker labeled the DEI policy as “cruel” and discredited. They expressed the opinion that categorizing individuals based on their background diminishes their dignity, likening this to past movements such as Black Lives Matter. They argued against labeling groups as victims or oppressors and criticized the concept of reparations as unjust for those not historically involved in slavery. This speaker advocated for local control over educational decisions, supporting calls to abolish the Department of Education and return authority to parents and board members.
Public comment extended beyond policies to specific classroom experiences. A parent named Jen Tenelli shared her dissatisfaction with an honors English class experience, alleging that the teacher displayed reluctance to teach and labeled students as “stupid.” Tenelli’s son, who has a 504 plan for dyslexia, reportedly received inadequate support, leading her to withdraw him from the honors program despite his academic success. She criticized the teacher’s methods, particularly the administration of a surprise test that negatively impacted grades, and expressed disappointment in the lack of action from school officials following her complaints.
During the meeting, a report on the Carl D. Perkins audit for the project period from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020, was also presented. The audit’s findings had been previously discussed, and staff were tasked with implementing corrective actions. The board adopted several items across various committees, including finance, insurance, buildings, grounds, dining, and transportation, following motions and roll call votes.
In addition to policy discussions, the meeting highlighted positive community contributions and student achievements. The board acknowledged holiday-themed events across schools, including food drives and festival celebrations. Woodbridge High School hosted a leadership conference with a speaker from the Mandela family, and students were recognized for their humanitarian efforts. A student representative, Justin Lee, a senior with a 4.18 GPA, was introduced. Lee participates in various extracurricular activities and has applied to prestigious universities with plans to double major in computer science and computer engineering.
