- Meeting Overview:
The Maple Shade Planning Board meeting on November 20, 2024, prominently featured the application for a new retail toy store, “Crypted Toys and Games,” on North Fork Landing Road. The proposed business, led by Andre Peruso, aims to attract families with a selection of toys, video games, and collectibles, but raised concerns about parking and crowd management in the congested area.
At the forefront of the meeting was applicant Andre Peruso’s presentation of the toy store concept. Represented by Ellen McDal, Peruso introduced his vision of a community-focused retail outlet offering unique products such as vintage toys and video games. He detailed his background in reselling and collecting, a passion he has pursued since his teenage years, and shared plans for the store to focus on retail sales rather than functioning as an arcade.
Peruso also highlighted his strong online presence, with a significant following on platforms like YouTube and live auctions on Whatnot. He anticipated that the store could initially draw daily foot traffic of 10 to 20 individuals, with potential growth as the business establishment gained popularity. The store layout was described in detail, with a welcoming entrance featuring plush toy displays and sections dedicated to media such as video games and films. Peruso also mentioned a repair area for video game consoles and certain toys, stating, “I can repair video game systems and almost anything electronic and toys.”
However, the board raised several concerns, primarily regarding parking and the management of large crowds during special events. There was particular apprehension about the possibility of events attracting up to 250 attendees, especially if notable figures from the wrestling or YouTube communities were involved. To address potential overcrowding, Peruso suggested implementing a scheduling system that would allow 20 to 30 customers to enter per hour. Despite these proposals, the board expressed the need for careful consideration of how the store’s activities might impact traffic and community dynamics.
Further discussion revolved around operational logistics, including employee requirements and waste management. Peruso mentioned the potential need for one or two employees and assured the board that packaging materials would be recycled at his home to prevent waste accumulation at the store. The owner also addressed delivery concerns, explaining that deliveries would involve smaller vehicles like U-Hauls rather than large trucks.
The business name and branding were another focal point, with Peruso confirming that “Crypted Toys and Games” would appear prominently on store signage. He elaborated on the marketing strategy, which includes developing a character associated with the business and introducing new characters quarterly to engage customers.
While the board deliberated on the application, the meeting also addressed several resolutions related to other business approvals. These included resolutions granting subdivision and bulk variances, conditional use site plan waiver approvals for craft operations, and the operation of a retail furniture store. Each resolution was presented and approved in turn.
As the meeting came to a close, members reflected on the holiday season and the potential for future engagements. A member noted it was likely their last meeting, expressing gratitude for their time on the board, while another mentioned the likelihood of continued involvement through informal gatherings.
