- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Fair Lawn School Board meeting, the board celebrated the long-term service of several board members, discussed comprehensive audit findings, and addressed concerns over the use of student photographs by a district administrator.
A major focus of the meeting was the recognition of Eugene M. Banta for his nearly 33 years of service to the Fair Lawn School District. In a gesture of appreciation, the board proposed a resolution to rename Room 19 at the Thomas Edison School as the “Eugene M. Banta Public Meeting Room.” The motion was met with unanimous approval and applause, as board members and attendees acknowledged Banta’s dedication and contributions over the years. The meeting took a brief recess to allow for photographs and to celebrate the occasion, with current and former board members joining in the commemoration.
Alongside Banta, the board also recognized Mark Spindel and Dr. Latina for their years of service. Spindel, who served for 12 years, was celebrated for his advocacy in mental health services and his extensive career in education. Dr. Latina was honored for her 21 years in Fair Lawn Public Schools, with gratitude expressed for her dedication to education and support for staff and administration. The resolutions for these members highlighted their contributions to the district, and each was met with applause from the community and board members.
In addition to these recognitions, the meeting included a detailed presentation of the school district’s financial status. The annual audit findings were discussed, with a focus on the general fund’s total revenue of approximately $101.5 million, which exceeded expectations by $3.2 million. The auditor emphasized the importance of maintaining reserves, including the capital reserve, maintenance reserve, and emergency reserve balances. The audit revealed no recommendations for improvement.
The presentation also addressed the district’s $123 million in general fund expenditures and a calculated maximum allowable surplus. Adjustments for restricted funds revealed an excess of $8.4 million, which will need to be utilized in the 2026 budget. The Enterprise Fund, particularly the Food Service Fund, was also examined, noting a decrease attributed to reduced federal and state reimbursements. The audit report commended the district for its fiscal responsibility and emphasized the need for timely reimbursement requests for federal grants.
Dr. Berini expressed gratitude for the thoroughness of the financial presentation, highlighting the district’s excellent financial health and acknowledging the efforts of the business department and staff. The absence of audit findings was celebrated as an unusual accomplishment. Suggestions were made for exploring banking options due to favorable interest rates and introducing a new food service management contractor in the following year.
Public comments during the meeting addressed concerns from a parent, Dea Corala Fon, regarding the use of student photographs by a district administrator on personal platforms. Fon expressed her distress over the lack of response from the board, emphasizing the need for policy adherence and parental consent. She requested an investigation into the matter, citing policy violations and urging the board to restore trust with parents.
The meeting also included reflections and expressions of gratitude from board members, particularly directed towards the departing members. Acknowledgments of their service highlighted the personal connections and impacts made during their tenures. Board members shared sentiments about the dedication and institutional knowledge being lost with the departure of these long-serving members. The commitment to maintaining the district’s leadership structure was emphasized, along with a call for continued collaboration and effective communication within the board.
