- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting filled with ceremonial acknowledgments and strategic planning, the Union Town Council reviewed a successful 2024, highlighting community events and new business openings. They also set their sights on ambitious projects for 2025, focusing on park improvements and enhanced public safety measures.
The meeting began with a formal acknowledgment of the special gathering, leading into the swearing-in ceremony where Manuel Figueiredo and Sandra Terrell took their oaths of office. The council swiftly moved into recognizing the achievements of the past year, emphasizing the positive impact of community engagement initiatives. Over 67 township events were noted, including the downtown art tour and the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, which fostered community spirit and participation.
A significant highlight was the opening of more than 28 new businesses. The council also celebrated advancements in recreational facilities, such as new pickleball courts and the renovation of the Volunteer Park turf soccer field. The recreation department’s introduction of a public speaking course and a Challenger soccer program marked strides in inclusive and developmental opportunities for youth.
Infrastructure improvements were another focal point. The council reported enhancements to over 40 roadways, contributing to safer driving conditions. Traffic enforcement measures resulted in over 2,300 stops and 2,470 tickets issued throughout 2024.
Senior programming took a notable leap forward with the inauguration of the 21st New Jersey veteran service office at the senior center, providing essential resources for veterans and their families. The council expressed gratitude for the community’s support, with one member stating, “Union has always felt like a small town where people care for and look out for one another.”
Looking ahead to 2025, the council announced plans for further park improvements, including the addition of new basketball and pickleball courts, playground enhancements, and the creation of a nature walk trail. Traffic safety strategies and community policing were also outlined as ongoing priorities to maintain and improve the quality of life for residents.
In the procedural aspects of the meeting, a series of appointments received unanimous approval. Kirk Nelson Esquire was appointed as Judge of the Municipal Court, with Daniel Antonelli confirmed as the Attorney. Various officials were also appointed to positions in energy control, flood control, and public safety.
Committees and advisory boards were established, covering sectors such as the Economic Advisory Committee and the Human Relations Commission. The council also approved Resolution 2025 D01 for temporary budget appropriations, and a consent agenda streamlined operations with resolutions covering meeting dates, official newspapers, and petty cash funds.
Professional service contracts for auditors, bond council, and other consultancies were authorized.
