- Meeting Overview:
The Hillside School Board meeting celebrated the contributions of outgoing member Calvin Lofton and marked a transition in leadership with the induction of new board members and the election of officers. Lofton was recognized for his service from 2022 to 2024, and the board swore in newly elected members Christian Estrera, Marjorie Hargrave, and Eric Okai. The board also elected Laquana Best as the new president and Jo-Ann Horton-Giv as the vice president.
The meeting began with a public acknowledgment of Calvin Lofton’s service. Lofton was presented with a plaque, and one speaker commended his positive influence, stating, “Calvin has laid his hands on them in some shape, form, or fashion in a positive way.” Lofton expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and emphasized his belief in faith as a driving force behind the accomplishments during his tenure. He highlighted specific achievements such as upgrading sports facilities and addressing overcrowding in schools, and humorously noted the extensive list of accomplishments he could discuss.
Following the recognition of Lofton, the board transitioned to the swearing-in of newly elected members Christian Estrera, Marjorie Hargrave, and Eric Okai, each elected for a three-year term. The board’s attorney administered the oath of office to each member, and they were welcomed with applause. The atmosphere was celebratory.
The meeting proceeded with the election of new officers for the Board of Education. Laquana Best was nominated for the position of president, and following a roll call vote, she was unanimously elected. Her election was met with applause, signaling support from the attendees. The board then moved to the election of a vice president. Marjorie Hargrave nominated Jo-Ann Horton-Giv, while another nomination was made for Donald Howard. After two separate roll call votes, Jo-Ann Horton-Giv was elected to serve as vice president.
The meeting continued with the reading and adoption of resolutions regarding the scheduling of public meetings, designating The Star Ledger and Union County Local Source as the official newspapers for meeting notices. The board also outlined procedures for public participation, reiterating that comments must be limited to three minutes and could be terminated by the presiding officer if necessary. These resolutions were passed with unanimous consent.
In addition to these procedural matters, the board adopted a series of resolutions as a block, including the authorization of standing committee assignments and conducting meetings in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order. They also re-adopted existing bylaws and policies. A motion was made to declare Citizens Bank as the depository for the board’s accounts, which also passed without contention. Dr. David Aken Holz was appointed as the public agency compliance officer for the calendar year 2025, receiving affirmative votes from all present.
The meeting concluded with President Best expressing her gratitude for the support of the new board members and acknowledging the work accomplished in the previous year despite various challenges. After inviting any final remarks from the board members and receiving none, the meeting was adjourned with unanimous agreement.
