- Meeting Overview:
The recent Stanhope School Board meeting was marked by significant leadership appointments, approval of personnel changes, and discussions on various procedural updates. With the election of a new board president and vice president, the board also addressed vacancies in its staffing and explored future initiatives, such as school climate assessments and policy updates.
One item at the meeting was the election of a new board president, a position filled unanimously. This decision followed the introduction of two new board members, with one, Mrs. Balato, taking the oath of office during the meeting. The board president election saw enthusiastic support from all members. Additionally, Mr. Harold was voted in as the vice president, also with unanimous backing.
Another focal point of the meeting was the approval of Bonnie Anglehart as the part-time business office clerical assistant, replacing Kim Campa who moved to a full-time position in another district. Anglehart emerged as the top candidate following a rigorous interview process involving six initial contenders. The appointment of Jack Copich as a substitute custodian was also ratified. His retroactive appointment was due to an oversight in his approval process, although he had already contributed as a summer custodian and during the holiday break.
The board addressed the upcoming retirement of Kathy Yonai, effective June 30, and discussed the need to post for her replacement by February.
In a forward-looking initiative, the board discussed its plan to contract with Rutgers University for the New Jersey School Climate Improvement Platform. This collaboration aims to conduct a comprehensive school climate survey targeting students, staff, and parents. The survey seeks to gather data critical for reviewing the school’s code of conduct, student handbook, and HIB policy.
Financial matters were also on the agenda, with a midyear budget review highlighting the district’s financial health. The county office commended the school’s fiscal management and its emphasis on student programming, particularly the extensive support services provided to special needs students from outside the district.
Policy discussions were set in motion with the receipt of a new policy alert, slated for review in an upcoming meeting. The anticipated labor-intensive nature of this meeting speaks to the board’s dedication to maintaining up-to-date and comprehensive policies. Additionally, the meeting touched on the potential legislative requirement for schools to establish cell phone policies, a topic expected to feature prominently in future board discussions.
Old business included updates on funding for a pre-kindergarten program, with ongoing challenges in securing approval for additional general education seats. The board is awaiting a response from the state regarding its application, highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles in expanding early childhood education offerings.
Lastly, the board continues to pursue a grant application for a regionalization feasibility study, awaiting presentations from Rowan University and Kean University. This initiative could pave the way for regional collaboration and resource sharing, contingent on the approval and subsequent formation of a steering committee.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to adjourn, transitioning into a Committee of the Whole session, a customary practice during the annual reorganization. This session further explored committee roles and responsibilities.
