- Meeting Overview:
The Franklin Township Council meeting on January 7, 2025, was marked by the appointment of the new Deputy Mayor, discussions on human trafficking awareness, and various community-focused initiatives. The council addressed pressing social issues, infrastructure improvements, and recognized the contributions of local volunteers.
One item at the meeting was the appointment of Councilwoman Shepa Uddin as the new Deputy Mayor for 2025. Nominated by a fellow council member, Uddin was elected unanimously without any competing nominations. In her acceptance speech, Uddin expressed gratitude for the support from her family and community, acknowledging the hard work of her parents and the importance of community service. She emphasized her commitment to embracing change and fostering growth within Franklin Township.
In another notable moment, a proclamation recognizing January as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month was presented. The council member who introduced the proclamation highlighted the grave issue of human trafficking, sharing statistics that emphasized the global and local impact, including a recent New Jersey case involving the trafficking of Nigerian women. The proclamation called for increased public awareness and community efforts to combat trafficking, pointing citizens toward resources such as the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking. This initiative aims to mobilize the community to take action and support victims.
Following this, a second proclamation declared January as Muslim Heritage Month. This recognition celebrated the contributions of the Muslim community to both Franklin Township and New Jersey as a whole.
Public safety was another key topic, with a council member reporting on recent car break-ins. The Police Department’s swift response and ongoing efforts to manage the situation were commended, and residents were encouraged to report any suspicious activities.
The meeting also saw the council addressing appointments for various township positions. The Mayor nominated Louis Rainone from the law firm of Rainone Coughlin Mello LLC as the township attorney, a nomination that was confirmed without opposition. Other appointments included Peg Schaer as tax appeal counsel and Robert W. Swisser as township auditor, among others. These appointments are important for the effective functioning of the township’s administrative and legal affairs.
Members expressed appreciation for the volunteers who serve on various boards and committees, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the community. The council underscored the importance of initiatives in health equity, job training, and food security, with aspirations for a new food bank building and the establishment of a YMCA in the township. These goals highlight the council’s focus on improving residents’ quality of life and addressing community needs.
The meeting also included updates on the township’s infrastructure projects. During a recent Public Works meeting, a presentation was made on integrating high-tech solutions to enhance municipal infrastructure and land management efficiency.
Additionally, the meeting covered upcoming community events, such as a free rabies clinic, the annual Martin Luther King community breakfast, and a veterans town hall meeting.
Finally, the council discussed the establishment of an affordable housing ad hoc committee, aimed at involving more community members in discussions related to affordable housing initiatives. This move aligns with the township’s efforts to address one of one notable issues facing many communities today. The council also entered an executive session to discuss a matter concerning a charter school request.
