- Meeting Overview:
The recent Hunterdon Central School Board meeting was dominated by public debate over the board’s alleged ties to the New Jersey Project, described by some as a “hate group. ” The meeting also saw the swearing-in of new board members, elections for leadership roles, and the approval of various operational and educational initiatives.
The public comment section emerged as the most newsworthy aspect of the meeting, with several community members voicing strong opinions about the board’s endorsement by the New Jersey Project. A resident from Flemington Borough, identified as Joff, urged the board to clarify its relationship with the group, highlighting concerns about inclusivity and the impact on the educational environment. He emphasized, “Blind obedience is not understanding and it is not education,” challenging the board to ensure all community voices are heard and respected.
This sentiment was echoed by Noel O’Donnell, who expressed disappointment with what he perceived as dishonesty from board members regarding their endorsement ties. He declared, “I didn’t spend six years on this board… to sit among people who lie when you ask them if they’re endorsed by the New Jersey Project.” His remarks underscored a broader concern about the implications of such endorsements for students within the district.
In contrast, Sandra from Raritan Township defended the New Jersey Project, arguing against its characterization as a hate group. She criticized the Southern Poverty Law Center, calling it “nothing more than a morally bankrupt smear factory,” and contended that endorsements from the New Jersey Project were merely recommendations from parents, not formal endorsements. This divergence in perspectives highlighted a significant schism within the community regarding the school board’s affiliations and their impact on community perception.
The meeting’s agenda also included several significant operational and educational items. The board announced upcoming visits to sending district middle schools to welcome incoming ninth-grade students of the Class of 2029. An open house event titled “World of Possibilities” is scheduled for January 16, inviting current and eighth-grade parents to explore elective offerings and engage with teachers.
In the operations and transportation committee, four items were unanimously approved. These included the acceptance of a New Jersey STEM Month mini-grant for the robotics team, a proposal for a bus valuation in collaboration with the Hunterdon County Educational Services Commission, the allocation of $135,000 of district state aid towards the transportation of regular buses, and updates on contracts with Omega Laboratories and Total Compliance Network.
The Personnel Committee reported on a resignation and a new appointment, both of which were approved without opposition. Following these committee reports, the board moved on to standard procedural approvals typical of an organizational meeting.
At the meeting’s outset, three new board members were sworn in: Jessica Roal from Delaware Township, Dr. Ellen Halper from Flemington Borough, and Leslie Lacosta from Readington Township, each beginning a three-year term. The board also held elections for leadership positions, with Lisa Santangelo nominated for board president and Leslie Lacosta elected vice president after a vote of six to three.
The board adopted a code of ethics, which was read aloud, outlining responsibilities such as upholding laws, making decisions in the best interest of students, and maintaining confidentiality concerning school matters. This motion was approved unanimously.
A thank-you note from staff was acknowledged by the board for a cookies and cocoa event organized to appreciate the hard work of staff and administration. The note praised the efforts of those involved, highlighting the event’s success and positive reception.
The superintendent’s report followed, welcoming back the board after the winter break and congratulating the newly elected officers. Preparations underway for the next school year were briefly referenced.
