Minnetonka School Board Approves Budget Cuts Amid Financial Challenges and Recognizes Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In a decision, the Minnetonka School Board approved budget adjustments to address a nearly $5 million projected deficit, which primarily involves reductions in personnel costs, including teaching staff salaries. The meeting also celebrated numerous student accomplishments, such as the achievements of the Tonka District Select Choir and the designation of new AP Scholars.
The Minnetonka School Board’s approval of budget cuts was a key focus of the recent meeting. Superintendent David Law and the board discussed necessary financial adjustments due to stagnant revenue growth and increasing expenses. The approved plan involves reducing personnel costs, with a portion of the cuts, $3.2 million, impacting teacher salaries. It was clarified during the meeting that while 65% of the total budget reductions would come from teacher salaries, this does not equate to reducing the teaching staff by 65%, but rather less than 3% of the total number of teachers.
The financial adjustments include a 10% increase in participation and bus fees, which have not been raised since 2004. Superintendent Law emphasized the need for these measures, citing a history of deficit spending and the necessity of maintaining a healthy fund balance. Mr. Bouris, who presented alongside Superintendent Law, highlighted the district’s challenges due to stagnant state revenue growth and encouraged community advocacy for increased education funding.
The board expressed appreciation for the administration’s collaborative approach in seeking input from community members and district employees on potential budget solutions. Although suggestions have been made, they are insufficient to eliminate the need for cuts.
In addition to addressing budgetary matters, the meeting included a recognition program celebrating student achievements. The board honored the Tonka District Select Choir for their upcoming performance at the American Choral Directors Association state conference. Choir director Melanie McKyer praised the students’ dedication. Students expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, with several sharing personal experiences of growth and enjoyment from participating in the choir.
The board also recognized the varsity football team’s accomplishments, as the Skippers qualified for the state championship for the first time since 2017, finishing as runners-up in Class 6A. The team was commended for their resilience and positive impact within the school community. Freshman Logan Bakis and senior team manager H Manon shared their experiences, emphasizing leadership and camaraderie developed during the season.
The bowling team received accolades for their successful fall season, with several members qualifying for the state championship. Coaches Nate Anderson and Douglas Johnson highlighted standout players and their contributions to the team dynamics. Student-athlete Thomas Olsen discussed the effort required to reach the conference level and his personal improvement over the season.
Further recognition was given to the newly named AP Scholars from the 2023-2024 school year. The AP Scholar designation, awarded by the College Board, honors students who scored three or higher on three or more exams. Students shared insights into the courses that inspired them, emphasizing the value of advanced placement classes in fostering critical thinking and opening career pathways. The board acknowledged the academic excellence present in the district, celebrating these students’ dedication and achievements.
The Minnetonka School Board also addressed administrative matters, including the election of school board officers for 2025. Patrick Lee-O’Halloran was unanimously elected as chair, with Kimary Foss appointed as vice chair, Dan Olson as treasurer, and Chris Vitale as clerk. The board approved the organizational structure and meeting calendar for 2025, maintaining continuity in financial institutions, the official newspaper, and the radio station for emergency announcements.
A school report was presented by Aaron Valenta, director of special education and building administrator at Sale, detailing programs supporting students in transitioning to adulthood. The programs focus on independent living skills, post-secondary education, and employment, with community partnerships playing a key role in providing practical experiences for students. Student representative Levi Moseman shared his personal experiences with various internships, highlighting skills acquired and the benefits of hands-on learning.
