- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Westport Library Board of Trustees meeting, the malfunction of the library’s alarm system and a potential installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) were primary topics of concern. The board also discussed future library infrastructure improvements, including new sliding doors, and shared updates on the Friends of the Library.
The board addressed a issue with the library’s alarm system. It was discovered that the alarms, due to phone line issues dating back to when the phones were switched over, were unable to automatically alert the fire or police department in case of an emergency. The problem has persisted intermittently, but the system has not been functional for emergency notifications. A technician has provided an estimate of $1,264 to fix the phone lines, which will involve installing antennas due to poor cell signal reception caused by the library’s thick cement walls. This cost does not cover the monthly monitoring fees, which will increase to $60 and $39 for fire and burglar alarms, respectively. The board seemed unanimous on the necessity of proceeding with the repairs, expected to be completed by the end of the week.
Another topic was the discussion of acquiring an AED for the library. The conversation was prompted by safety concerns raised by a board member’s relative, who highlighted the simplicity of operating such devices, which provide step-by-step instructions during use. The board debated potential liability issues and training requirements, recognizing the presence of AEDs in other public buildings like Town Hall. It was suggested that grants might be available to cover the cost, and further information will be gathered to aid in the decision-making process.
Infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda. The library is set to receive new sliding doors equipped with sensors, which will replace the existing entryway. This upgrade aims to improve accessibility, particularly for individuals with disabilities, and to reduce the cold air entering the building. The project is scheduled to commence once the doors are ordered, with funds expected at the end of January and an approximate eight-week lead time for delivery.
The meeting also touched on the Friends of the Library’s upcoming discussions about acquiring a new shed. Estimates are being gathered to determine whether constructing a new shed or purchasing a pre-built one would be more cost-effective. Additionally, an update was provided on the arrival of new chairs for the library.
