Dighton Committee Approves Historical Society’s Eligibility for Wall Restoration Funding
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Dighton Community Preservation Committee approved an eligibility application from the Dighton Historical Society to seek funding for the repair and restoration of a bulging, collapsing load-bearing wall at the Winslow Davis Museum. The committee acknowledged the historical significance of the property and agreed that the project met the criteria for eligibility. The repairs are estimated to cost between $10,000 and $12,000, though concerns were raised about potential cost increases once the wall is opened for further inspection.
The Winslow Davis Museum, owned by the Dighton Historical Society, has a visibly bulging wall on its south side, attributed to water damage, though the full extent is unknown until further inspection. The society has already sought additional funding through a cultural facilities grant, which would cover 50% of the project costs, but they are exploring all avenues due to limited resources. The committee discussed the importance of ensuring there are sufficient funds to cover potential unforeseen expenses, suggesting that more than one contractor should assess the damage if possible, given the limited number of specialists in historic building restoration.
The committee also discussed updates on other ongoing historical projects, such as the West Tian survey and the M. Hope Finishing Company national register nomination. The board of selectmen signed a contract for the latter project, which is expected to start in the spring and last approximately 30 weeks.
In addition to project updates, the committee addressed the ordering of CPC signage, which is now complete. The signs, intended to mark sites benefiting from CPC funding, were ordered through the town’s Amazon account, coming in under budget.
