Coon Rapids City Council Welcomes New Officers and Prepares for Snowflake Days
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Coon Rapids City Council meeting, the council welcomed five new police officers and set the stage for the upcoming Snowflake Days celebration. The event was marked by community enthusiasm, highlighting the council’s ongoing efforts to foster local engagement and support public safety initiatives.
The meeting commenced with the swearing-in of five new police officers, a significant occasion for the Coon Rapids Police Department and the community. Police Chief Steiner introduced Adam Bachman, Peter Geese, Carol Wallsmith, Salma Salvador, and Ariel Hudson, each receiving their unique badges in a ceremony underscoring the department’s core values of trust, professionalism, and compassion. Chief Steiner emphasized the unique nature of the badges, stating, “We don’t recycle badges here; nobody’s ever worn these badges, and nobody will ever wear them again but you.” The new officers, each with distinct backgrounds and motivations, took their oaths of office, pledging to serve the community with dedication. The ceremony was attended by numerous supporters, reflecting strong community backing for the officers.
The council then shifted focus to the 2025 Snowflake Days celebration, an annual event fostering community spirit and participation. Pat Carlson, a council member, was introduced as the Marquee for the event, acknowledging his deep-rooted connections to the community and extensive volunteer work. Snowflake Days, now in its 61st year, will feature a variety of activities from January 31 to February 9, including a medallion hunt, a snow sculpture contest, a chili challenge, and a Guns and Hoses hockey game. The event lineup promises engaging activities for residents of all ages, with an emphasis on community involvement and celebration.
The council further discussed the contributions of the Coon Rapids Community Strength Foundation (CSF), an all-volunteer organization enhancing community events through financial support and initiatives. Members of the CSF shared their accomplishments, including the successful execution of the city’s Fourth of July celebration and Rocky’s Pumpkin Patch, despite weather challenges. A new Memorandum of Understanding with the city was established to formalize their partnership.
In other business, the council reviewed several infrastructure projects, emphasizing strategic improvements across the city. The 2025 Full Depth Reclamation Project, targeting seven streets with four alternates, was discussed, with council members approving the plans and specifications for solicitation of bids. The project aims to extend the lifespan of city roads cost-effectively, aligning with budget constraints while prioritizing future large-scale improvements.
Solar energy initiatives were also on the agenda, with the council approving contracts for solar system installations at Fire Station 3 and the West Water Treatment Plant. The installations are set to commence in the spring and summer of 2025, promising long-term cost savings and reduced environmental impact.
Additionally, the council approved a cooperative construction agreement for improvements to Trunk Highway 10. This expansion, funded primarily through federal and state allocations, is expected to enhance traffic flow and community connectivity.
In the final moments of the meeting, the council briefly discussed a constituent request regarding the inclusion of domestic ducks in the city ordinance, akin to the existing chicken ordinance. The suggestion was noted for future discussion, adding a touch of light-heartedness to the proceeding.
